"Smyrna gave apprentice M Roberts his first winning ride and the youngster showed promise of developing into a good prospect"
How prophetic was that??

Mac - no not his first ride - not sure how many it took but will check when back in the office on Monday.
Scotia - only a pleasure to share some of these memories with Clanners - will continue to try and find interesting snippets to post each week when I have spare time.
If it stimulates interest in the game that is great.

Mac - it was his 7th ride I think - he made his debut on 28th June 1969 and was carded to ride two horses - in his first race he finished 11th of 13 and was due to ride Galley Lad two races later. In the weighing room before the race he was advised by a stipe that he could not ride in the race because he was not experienced enough (in those days jocks had to have 12 qualifying rides - 6 down the straight and 6 around the bend) so he was considered not experienced enough for a mile and a half race!!!! He was replaced by Snowy Reid who duly won the race on Galley Lad with consummate ease.
Just by the by - Earnie Duffield always referred to Muis as Mace in his book and nothing would change him!!!

@ collins and scotia
is it not cool that in those days Muis and The Shoe were considered so small they had appropriate nicknames and were excellent jockeys and now we have the champion of the UK standing at nearly 6ft
