I met him in England a couple of times when I used to manage the Australian jumping riders team to England and Ireland. He was a big fellow when I met him, and I am tipping that he would have major weight issues, a bit like Pat Taaffe did.

South Wind was a really top horse in his day. In the race mentioned here, he was trained by oom Fred Pienaar, a seasoned Trainer also from PE. South Wind was owned by uncle Carl Gierke and ridden by his son Roy Gierke, the family being from East London. There is a suburb on the Zwartkops river called Bluewater Bay. I think that uncle Carl was the developer. Later, he had a filly which he named Bluewater Bay who won the Nursery down there, trained by my late dad. Roy was the pioneer of parasailing/microlites etc in the early 70's.

Not long after this race, South Wind was sent to us, where he won a few more hurdles and also a few more on the Turf over ground, including 3600m. I still have an oil painting of South Wind today. The painting was done by Mrs Patti Smith. My dad really loved South Wind and the painting has a message. Seated on South Wind is the late uncle Roy Curling, whom my dad rated as the best stable jock/money rider of all and with whom he had ridden before his weight got to him. The colours are the old gold and royal blue of the late, great, oom Felix Coetzee whom my dad rated as the best horseman that he had ever worked with/for. My dad was apprenticed and also jockey to oom Felix, before training on his on.

Courtly, who ran in the race, was a very difficult horse. When he was being schooled for hurdles, he would take off, straight through the hurdle when he felt like it. That he ever got to race and complete a hurdle race, is astounding.

Another horse who did well in hurdles for us was Larome, owned by Mr. Borelli. I have a pic of Andre Ferreira training one of our horses for a hurdle race. In the pic, Andre is in the air, jumping a hurdle, whilst my dad is riding alongside on Larome. I will try and post it.

Wow, this brings back memories !

this is what i love about raceing all the good memory. it is the great pity that the majority of posters have little or no time for the raceing heritage all that is concern them is to find the winners of the ngong p6 with 70000 stolen rand from our money >:D<
louisg many time i punt winners in PE your dad train. in those day the raceing in PE was also on the saturday and i attend a few meetings there where there are plenty people on the course i will say easily 5000 may be even double. i miss the glory day of raceing may be im just the senile old man but for me those day were much better than we have to day. is my thoughts.
