Vaal Sand Jottings

Hmmm, well that worked badly, opened 25s UK, shant be doing that again!!! lol

Difficult card imo with the market suggesting some untried sand runners will suit the surface and plenty scope for shocks, tread carefully day me thinks... as ever, please use the daily thread for comments, selections etc and be(s)t of luck to all...

RACE 1 - WR MAIDEN - 1450

1 GYPSY AL - Sand debut. Breeding suggests a good chance he will take to the surface and if so doing, with Semela up from the 2 draw must have a bright chance

2 ZAPATEO - A Laird. Sand debut. Nothing in the breeding to suggest he will definitely enjoy the sand and is drawn wide with a WR up who is yet to finish in the top 3. Not impossible but others seem more likely

3 CLUB LANE - Sand debut. Breeding suggests a good chance he will take to the surface and if so doing, decent WR aboard and from the 3 box has a chance, though the d is possibly a little on the short side

4 GOLDEN DOLLAR - Disappointing when well beaten lto over 1000 on his second run on c. First attempt was much better when a running on 2nd in another WR race over 1200 and the third won next time out. Decent WR aboard and despite a slightly wide draw in 8 is not without a chance

5 TOBE TURF TERROR - Better effort on the sand lto when 4th beaten 10.25l over 1600, 11.75l ahead of Hobb's Flight. Has the 1 draw and a competent WR up. Another in with a chance but not the most likely

6 HOBB'S FLIGHT - Has 2 silvers and 2 bronze in 13 c/d attempts and has put in some fair efforts from poor draws recently but not the most consistent and was disappointing when well beaten lto over 1600

7 KING - Yet to place in 6 c/d attempts and was only 1.5l behind HF 3 runs back over c/d. Has another high draw here though and unlikely

8 RISING TIGER - Beaten 35l on sand debut and though the blinkers come off, turf form was not inspiring and drawn 14 here, can't be recommended on what has been seen to date

9 BUSHVELDS PRIDE - No top 3s in 5 c visits and WR has just one 3rd in 11 rides. Has a decent draw in 4 but another who can't be recommended

10 WAR PLANE - Beaten 50l on sand debut, turf form was not inspiring, drawn 11 here and WR has just one 3rd in 28 rides. Should not feature

11 TEXAS TIGER - Beaten 12.25l on both c visits, though was 3rd of 8 in his first attempt (1000). Been off 40 weeks and up in d again. Not one that seems likely to trouble the judge

12 RIVER ROMANCE - Not finished within 9.75l of the winner in 11 runs and beaten 14.25l in only sand run (1800). Drawn high in 13 and another who it is hard to make a winning case for

13 ECO SYSTEM - Sand debut. Well beaten in only turf run, drawn in 9, WR not yet had a top 3 in 5 rides and nothing in the breeding states he will improve for the surface

14 JUDGE THE STRIDE - Sand debut. Nothing in breeding to say he will definitely like the sand, 2 poor turf runs and 17 weeks off but, Mosia up for an in form trainer and goes from a decent draw. Some potentially significant market support and morning update, blinkers and tongue-tie on

Of those with sand experience, there is no stand-out performer and I think it quite possible the sand debutants will fight this out, possibly worth taking the chance that they do in this field and given the d and market support, I favour... GYPSY AL x JUDGE THE STRIDE x CLUB LANE

RACE 2 - CONDITIONS-1800

2 PYLON - Azzie/Lerena. Won 7 and second once in 8 c visits and is 100% in 4 c/d runs. Fradd had moved to Eastern Cobbler. Though not entirely convincing lto over 1600, his record speaks for itself and not easy to oppose despite the line seemingly being needed lto

3 SPECTROSCOPE - 3 gold and 2 bronze in 8 c runs and 1-0-1 in 3 over c/d. Good win lto and drawn in poll but may find a few here too good

4 JET JAMBOREE - One silver in 2 c visits, both over 1600. Last time out was 4.5l behind Magic Smoke when on 2nd run after a rest and no swing in the weights. Not without a chance with PS up but I am just not convinced about him

6 MAGIC SMOKE - Azzie. 3-4-1 in 12 c runs but yet to go this d on c, and was well beaten on only turf run at this d. Has a 5.5kg pull with Pylon for a 7l defeat lto over 1600 and defeated JJ comfortably last time they met. In with a shout but has been well beaten 3 times by Pylon and my impression is the latter would need to be below par for MS to win

7 EMPEROR AUGUSTUS - Azzie. Only c start was when 2nd in a reasonable field over 1600 in his second career start. Has obviously progressed on the turf since and could be the one to challenge Pylon assuming sand performance "improves" in similar vein.

8 USHKADEL - 1-2-1 in 8 c/d runs but up in class here against some proven strong campaigners and unlikely to feature

Pylon did not entirely convince lto but still won and remains hard to oppose imo though depending on price Emperor Augustus could appeal as an e/w option... PYLON x EMPEROR AUGUSTUS x MAGIC SMOKE

RACE 3 - MAIDEN-1000

2 HANDSOME DANCER - one 2nd and a 3rd in 6 c/d runs and has a decent draw in 10. Not the worst sand form on show and was coming off a 21 week rest when behind Tornado Twister (5l) and 2l behind Salute the Sun (Mr A race)

3 MAGIC OF ROME - Has 7 top 3s in 29 d runs but unplaced in both c/d runs and makes little appeal on both that sand form and current overall form

4 SALUTE THE SUN - one 2nd and a 3rd in 7 c/d runs but is probably better drawn in 18 this time than has been the case in recent runs. Has 1.5l to find with TT (now scratched) on last run and 3l on penultimate but swing in draws could prove significant

5 ROYAL STOCK - Yet to finish in the top 3 in 5 c runs and 10 d runs. Gunter up and the strongest jock in some time but task probably made even tougher by the 2 draw

6 JUST A THOUGHT - SJG. Sand debut. Rests have followed both turf runs when not supported in the market. Drawn on the low side but a little in the breeding suggests he might like the surface. Not one that can be recommended but if the price allows, a possible R1 e/w on the chance he likes the sand

7 MARSDEN - Sand debut. Appie takes a little weight off and drawn in 9 but nothing in breeding to suggest he will be one who takes to the surface and well beaten in only turf run

8 TRANSLATOR - C Laird. Sand debut. Returns from a 10 week rest after being well beaten with blinkers last turf run, prior to that had performed consistently including 2 silvers in 3 d runs. Nothing in breeding to suggest he will definitely like the surface but definite chance if so doing from a high draw of 16

9 JIMMYS LIGHTNING - Twice well beaten on the turf at this d but, respectable effort on sand debut when beaten 5l from the widest draw over 1200 lto. Has a draw on the low side here which possibly won't make it easier but not without a chance

10 SHAVAR - Spies/Chambers. C debut. Drawn high in 15 but well beaten 4 times at Bingo and hard to envisage heavy defeats there turning into success here

11 AH-HA - Debut. Nothing in the breeding to say he will be a sand lover but runs for an in form trainer and goes from a high draw

12 BUNDESTAG - Sand debut. Well beaten in only turf run but breeding suggests he might like this surface. Decent draw in 8 but stable seemingly not at their best currently

13 MARTIN - well beaten on debut over this c/d and hard to see that required improvement will be forthcoming to win this from a low draw despite appie taking weight off

14 SHEPHERD'S SONG - Goosen. Breeding suggests a good chance he will enjoy the surface and would be of e/w interest if not for the 1 draw. Depending on price may still be worth an R1 interest

15 WIN A MILLION - Sand debut. Has a potentially good draw in 12 , Fradd up and some respectable turf form. Has come in for market support but rested 19 weeks and nothing in the breeding to suggest he will definitely take to the surface, watching brief. Morning update, tongue tie on

16 THE SISTERHOOD - Sand debut. Has draw 14 but achieved little in 5 turf runs and there is nothing in the breeding to suggest he will definitely take to the surface

17 ARCTIC FOX - Reserve. Drops to the minimum trip but has shown little in 6 runs, one of which was on c when beaten 24l over 1450

I have no strong fancy in the race and the market indicates Win A Million and Translator will love the surface but, especially at their current prices I'd rather see the proof first. Thus looked for potential value and despite the poor trainer form and requiring form reversals, it is possible Handsome Dancer will come on nicely for his last run and I may well chance him in a small e/w. Would like LG's more if drawn better... HANDSOME DANCER x SALUTE THE SUN x SHEPHERD'S SONG

RACE 4 - MAIDEN-1800

1 ASIATIC PEARL - Not the most consistent, 5 3rds in 14 runs, and although was well beaten on her only sand run over 1600 she was rested for over a year straight after. Breeding indicates she could enjoy the surface more than that outing suggests. It is difficult to have confidence in her but if something was amiss on that only sand run then could be a big runner given the weak field

2 PRETTY LADY - Respectable run lto when returning to the surface and tried in a h'cap finishing just over 4l back of Elegant Bay. Usually not too far off the winner. Appie takes a little weight off and in with a shout

3 NOBLE WIND - Has 2 top 3s in 7 c runs and another who is usually not too far away at the death. Has run ok from high draws before but trainer form not the best and not yet finished in the top 3 in 5 d attempts. That said, was gaining over 1600 when a decent second lto 5.75 clear of Hunt The Stars in 3rd and with three other rivals here up to 1.75l further back, another with a chance

4 AT DAYBREAK - Beaten 40l on c debut over 1450 lto. That may have been too short but overall record of one 3rd in 12 runs does not inspire confidence though occasionally not too far off. Drawn high and trainer form not the best. Too many negatives currently to have an interest

5 HUNT THE STARS - Two 3rds in 5 c visits but not been within 7l of the winner and well behind NW lto. Despite the 1 draw it is hard to see her reversing the form and she usually fades in her runs, unlikely winner

6 SHIRLA - Pettigrew/MVR. Behind HTS in last two outings (excuses in penultimate) and 6.25l behind NW lto. Three runs back though finished 13.5l ahead of HTS and 2l ahead of Day ATR. Decent draw in 4 and has 2 silvers in 5 c runs, not out of it if producing best but seems inconsistent and another who is hard to support with confidence

7 BLACK MAGIC WOMEN - No top 3s in 5 c visits and 6.75l back of NW lto. Tries the trip for the first time but no reason to suppose she can find the big improvement needed

8 DAY AT THE RACES - 3rd on c debut over this d, 2l behind Shirla and well infront of HTS. Received outsider support that day from 18s to 8s and another with a chance

9 TEMPS PERDU - Beaten 12l in both c runs over shorter in weak fields. Has the 2 draw but will have to show more before becoming a viable proposition

10 FRENCH APPROVAL - Has a silver in 3 c visits but was beaten 7.5l by the winner that day and looks well held by others on subsequent efforts. Seemingly not stable elect and hard to see improvement coming to reverse formlines

11 SABOLA - Beaten 28l on c debut over 1200 and beaten 50l on turf over 1600. Seemingly not stable elect and though appie takes weight off from the 3 box, should be an also ran

12 SAIL ON - Azzie. Sand debut. Lost ground and didn't really feature on debut over 1450 on the turf. Azzie always to be respected though and the breeding does suggest a chance she will like the surface. In a poor field could be worth chancing a small e/w if the price is decent and hope she gets away better

13 SO CLOSE - Beaten 27l on c debut over 1450 following a 20 week rest following a poor turf debt over 1000. Seemingly not stable elect and seems unlikely from the 11 box

Difficult race with a few with inconsistent form and a big surprise would not be a major shock. The Azzie sand debutant interests me a little if only because of the weakness of the field. Little more than guess work and hope in truth... SAIL ON x ASIATIC PEARL x DAY AT THE RACES

RACE 5 - 1200 H'CAP-68

1 AUTHENTICATED - 5 top 3s in 11 c visits and 2 silvers in 5 efforts over c/d including under this appie in penultimate run when 6.2l clear of 3rd and a couple of these further back. Ok draw in 5 and trainer in form, likely to be a big runner if reproducing penultimate

2 JUMBO - 4 top 3s in 14 c visits and 2 silvers in 7 efforts over c/d. Best form seems to have deserted him of late and though not without a chance, in current form and from the 8 box, he is not one that interests me greatly here

3 MICROSTATE - Sand debut. Achieved little on the turf since maiden win, drawn 7, rested 33 weeks, trainer seemingly not firing and nothing in the breeding to suggest he will like the sand. Unlikely

4 WISHFUL HEART - Goosen/Strydom. 2nd followed by maiden win, both over 1450, indicates a liking of the sand and PS retains the ride with a drop in trip. Wasn't the strongest of maiden fields but second won next time out and has a chance of following up from the 2 box

5 HIGHLAND LAD - 3 top 3s in 7 c visits and won maiden over c/d in penultimate run in a WR race. Has a squeak with appie taking weight off but the 11 draw is likely to prove a hindrance

6 CROKE PARK - Only one silver in 4 c runs but that was in his only effort over c/d. Has generally been campaigned over further without success but the run over 1200 was very fair. Not the worst draw in 6 and if the price permits R1 e/w could well be worth the risk despite the stable appearing to be very cold currently

7 TAKAAMUL - 3 top 3s in 8 c visits including 2nd and 3rd in 3 efforts over c/d. Fradd up but another who is perhaps not running at his best lately, being beaten at Bingo over this d after jumping awkwardly and well behind on last run here over 1000. With a tough draw in 10 another I'll pass on awaiting concrete proof he is firing on all cylinders

9 KWAAIWATER - 3 wins and a 3rd in 20 c runs and has a decent draw in 4 but seemingly not in the best form of late and looks held by a few. Tries the d for the first time on c but faded badly over 1160 on the turf lto

10 PASSION PLEASER - 1-1-1 in 12 c visits but another who looks held by several others. Can't discount entirely from the 1 draw with Brown up but based on recent form must be marked down as unlikely

11 DEFENDER OF PEACE - Spies/Chambers. Despite often finding a little market support has consistently disappointed since her maiden win and not been within 10l of the winner in his last 4 starts. No top 3s in 3 c runs. Tough draw in 9 and a surprise if troubling the judge

12 SWING AWAY - Runs ok at Bingo but 1-0-0 in 9 c visits here and yet to be in the top 3 in 4 d runs (3 over c/d), with a draw of 12 highly unlikely to be involved at the finish

13 CHESHIRE CAT - Reserve. Sand debut. A little in the breeding suggests he may take to the surface but with only 1 silver in 6 d runs on the turf and the widest draw of all, probably not today

Another difficult one to decipher. Authenticated must have a decent chance if reproducing his penultimate run but just somehow doesn't convince me to support him. I'm more drawn to the Goosen horse but quite possible that it is another race where a surprise result wouldn't cause too great a shock... WISHFUL HEART x CROKE PARK x AUTHENTICATED

RACE 6 - 1200 H'CAP-64

1 SHREYA'S ANGEL - Won maiden in penultimate over c/d with the runner-up winning next time out. Respectable 5th beaten 6.25l lto over 1000 in only run since. Lerena retains the ride and not without hope but drawn 13 which will make it tough

2 STAR VOYAGER - No top 3s in 11 c runs, 5 over the d, trainer not in the best form and a difficult draw in 10. Shouldn't feature

3 INK HEART - Well beaten in both sand starts and though she should strip fitter and has a decent draw in 4, a 4kg pull with Savanna Montana for an 8l defeat over 1000 lto is unlikely to be enough to reverse the form

4 CAROUSEL - Magner. Won maiden on c over 1000 in penultimate but has only a 1kg pull with SM for a 5.5l defeat lto and hard to see that form being reversed

6 DANIELLE - Has no top 3s in 5 c runs and none in 3 d runs, 1 over the c. On the bare form she should not feature. However, on closer inspection her draws on the sand have been far from kind and some of her runs have been respectable given those draws... including finishing 3l ahead of SM (behind Miravar) over 1450 in June and is now only 0.5kg worse off (Penny now up taking off 4kg so 3.5kg better off). She may prefer further, the trainer form is not the best but with the 2 box here and a likely big price, a throw away R1 e/w is tempting

7 SAVANNAH MONTANA - Won well lto over 1000 with a number of these behind. Overall form prior to that though was far from convincing and has an overall record of 1-0-0 in 8 d runs, 6 of them on c. Must have a decent chance based on the last run with PS retaining the ride but likely to be a short price and could be more value elsewhere given her d record

8 SET TO STRIKE - Magner. Returned to form lto over c/d when beaten 1.75l into 4th behind Water Bird. that was from the 1 draw though and is now running from 12 following a 10 week rest. Can't be discounted completely on that last run but unlikely given the rest, draw and an overall c/d record of 1-0-1 in 7 attempts

9 COUNTESS BACARDI - 0-1-2 in 12 c runs and 0-0-1 in 4 over c/d does not inspire great confidence but was better lto when 4th over 1000 2.9l ahead of SA and with a couple of others behind. Drawn 8 with Fradd up but will have to repeat the last run over this d before I would be interested

10 ROMEO'S FAN CLUB - No top 3s in 5 c runs and 0-1-1 in 14 d attempts, poor trainer form and drawn 9, shouldn't be involved

11 SPANISHLILY - One 3rd in 6 c runs, drawn 11 and seems well held by some of these rivals. Shouldn't be troubling the judge

12 IZAANAZAMA - Spies. Not been within 11l of the winner in 5 most recent runs between here and Bingo. Drawn in 1 but has had that box before with no effect. Should be watching from some way back as the winner hits the line

13 WEATHER REPORT - Reserve. Spies. Beaten 14l and over 20l twice in her 3 c runs, well held by others and the 3 draw should be of little consequence

Questions against a number of those likely to be leading the market so I'm going to go with a real roughie and say a few prayers... DANIELLE x SAVANNA MONTANA x COUNTESS BACARDI

RACE 7 - 1450 H'CAP-72

2 SARATOGA MAGIC - A Laird. Sand debut. Good chance of taking to the surface based on the breeding and well drawn in 4 and though last two turf efforts have been poor, was decent prior to that and got silver at only d attempt. Chance.

3 RABADASH - No top 3s in 4 c visits and recent turf efforts uninspiring with an overall 2-1-0 record in 16 d runs. Has a good draw in 2 and often not far away but hard to see him making the winner's box

4 WHERE'S MY CHOP - SJG/Fradd. 9 top 3s in 17 c runs and is 0-1-2 in 7 tries over c/d but was soundly beaten over c/d lto. He can be forgiven that given his usual consistency and on previous formlines, Baron Zemo collateral for example, he must again have a fair chance if the latest run does not signal bigger issues

5 START YOUR ENGINES - Hard to assess. Well beaten on sand debut over 1000, then won maiden comfortably from a good draw over 1200 before being hammered by Bareback over the same d, again from a good draw, when fav. Turf form since has also been somewhat inconsistent. I'll oppose, partly because of the d, but I wouldn't be shocked if he won

6 SERMON - 4-1-2 in 22 runs over c/d and can't be entirely discounted but recent form has not been his best and hard to see that changing from the 10 draw here

7 BAREBACK - 4-1-1 in 31 c visits but yet to be in the top 3 in 4 tries at the d. Another who is not the most consistent and can pop up unexpectedly but not one I can support with any confidence and the 9 draw probably won't help his chances

8 PAINTYOURFACE - Magner/Lerena. 1-0-1 in 7 c visits but both those placings came in his only two runs over this c/d including the win 3 runs back and from that run the 2nd,3rd and 5th have all won since and the 4th and 6th have both run silvers. He beat Ligeti 3l that day giving 7.5kgs which compares very favourably with King Scott. Ligeti did turn that form around though by 7ls next time out over 1600 with a 7l success. Has the 1 box and assuming he is best suited to this d rather than further which has often been the case, then could well be a decent e/w bet

9 UP ABOVE - Tarry. Sand debut. Nothing in the breeding to say he will definitely take to the surface but any tarry horse on the sand has to be respected and decent appie takes weight off. Has an ok draw in 6 and on 3rd run after a rest, prices now up and see this one has come in for a little support, had a small saver at 16s

10 ZEBULON - 3-6-3 in 32 c runs but trainer seemingly out of form and the horse is only 0-1-1 in 10 d runs, 7 of which were on this c. Drawn in 8. Will need a return to best form to have a chance and that does not seem likely

11 KING SCOTT - Won on the turf lto. Has a 0-1-2 in 6 c runs with the bronze coming in his only try over c/d. Last c visit saw him finish 2nd 0.5l ahead of Ligeti giving 1kg over 1600, and 6l ahead of Chedwin Park though the two were only 0.5l apart in the run prior to that over 1450. Has not had the vest of luck with draws and that continues here with box 11. Definite chance but may prefer a little further than today's d

12 CHEDWIN PARK - Won comfortably on the turf lto. Closely matched with KS on last c/d meeting finishing only 0.5l and, with the appie up here, is now 4kgs better off. That benefit is somewhat challenged though by KS proving much the stronger over 1600 the next time they met. Another who has not had the best draws which continues here with 13. Chance.

13 FLAMING FORGE - Won his maiden here but no top 3s in 6 subsequent efforts, though it would be fair to say the vast majority of those came when his turf form was also poor. The turf form has now improved and it now remains to be seen if the sand form will also do so... and that will only be known in hindsight! lol Definite chance if so but drawn in 12 and may prefer further. Watching brief

14 CATAMAGIC - No top 3s in 4 c runs and just one silver in 6 d runs. fair draw in 5 but seems well held and should not trouble the judge

Another difficult one but for value I'll side with Paintyourface e/w back over 1450. Plenty in with a chance though, including the sand debutants if they take a liking to the surface... PAINTYOURFACE x SARATOGA MAGIC x CHEDWIN PARK

RACE 8 - 1450 H'CAP-68

1 ICE GODDESS - Sand debut. Won only attempt at this d on the turf. Fair chance on breeding of taking to the surface. Trainer form not strong though, on 2nd run after a rest and the 10 draw won't help with a big weight, watching brief

2 FANZENE - 0-1-1 in 5 c visits and has a silver from 3 d attempts, appie takes weight off but drawn widest of all and not done enough to persuade me she can win from there

3 COCHINEAL - Sand debut. Breeding suggests there is a good chance she will take to the sand but is drawn wide in 13 and on 2nd run after a rest. Found a little early market support which has removed much of the value but possible e/w if drifting again

5 BEAUTIFUL DAWN - 7 top 3s in 22 c runs, PS up and well drawn in 3. Concern is the d over which she has a silver in 4 over c/d but 4 further blanks in her overall d record. Has to have a chance but the d record negates confidence in the pluses

6 PIGEON POWER - Following two fair efforts over 1600 when poorly drawn she took advantage of a good draw lto to record a very good win with 5 of these rivals behind, the closest being SpiritofA 8.5l back in 2nd. Ok draw here in 7 and must have a good chance of following-up

8 ZENA'S OWN - 1-1-1 in 8 c runs but has struggled since coming out of the maidens 4 runs back. That said, she has come up against some fair sorts and not had the best of draws in those runs. In the penultimate over 1200 she actually ran a decent second from the widest draw, albeit 7.25l adrift of the winner. Beaten 22.5l by PP lto in her first d attempt. With the 1 draw here she might produce a lot better but not convinced she is best suited to this d

9 MRS CHING - Has not looked particularly dangerous in either c runs to date and with the stable seemingly not at their strongest, she will have to produce better before I would show an interest

10 THE ANGELUS - Well beaten in 4 c visits since winning maiden here convincingly. Better drawn than when beaten 11.25l by PP lto but hard to see that form being reversed

11 CERISE SILK - Magner. 1-3-4 in 17 c runs and though she only broke her maiden tag lto, was beaten only 2.25l by ZO over 1200 and has a 1.5kg pull may be the better of the two at this d and also has some lines with BD which put them fairly close. Entitled to be thereabouts

13 SPIRITOFAMPHITRITE - 0-1-3 in 8 c visits and well beaten into second behind PP and hard to see that form being reversed from another high draw

14 SUCHA WONDER - She has an 0-1-2 record in 17 runs over c/d and was 16.5l behind PP last time they met. Has the 4 draw which is her best for some time but still hard to see her being involved at the death

15 RAVING QUEEN - Both c defeats came over 1000 so difficult to assess but both attempts at 1400 on the turf saw her fade badly, unlikely

Hard to oppose Pigeon Power... PIGEON POWER x CERISE SILK x COCHINEAL
