I generally feel the handicappers in PE are too quick to slap and 8 point penalty for horses wins. In JHB unless a horse wins by a street or wins while under sufference do they incur that penalty. IMO merit rating should be consistant in all centers.

Lord Hawke got 8
.Bareback, who is extremely inconsistent, was used as the line horse.

For those of us not in the know
1.Is there somewhere that we can go to to see which was was the line horse in any specific race.
2.How does one choose a line horse

2cents the Vaal Sand also seems to penalize horses harshly, especially if their first few runs on Sand is an improvement on their Turf form. (td)

Ben Hur,
The line horse will be published. We have that passed by NHRA.
Robert Garner is now dealing with it, from a publication point. Should be soon.

That is good news..........it is the key to the issue .The actual maths of MR calculation you could teach a child.

On 28th June Two Gun Kid 4yo
Came into the race as a 75
beat Polo Warrior by 2kg (3.5-1.5 wfa) and 4.25L, say about 12 points
and Siverano by -2kg and 6.00L, say about 8 points
rest is worse
8th July now comes in rated (75 +
= 83
beat Jupiter (89) -3kg (receiving) and 3.25L, earns 89/90
beat Queen (74) 4.5kg and 4.50L, so earns new rating say 92
rest is worse
It really is difficult to explain such an improvement, but handicappers can't have horses winning handicaps by 3 and 4 lengths.
The other issue is ratings that gravitate upwards in PE.
I find I have a steady upward creep with the ratings of horses in PE, the same as the handicapper. I have some theories why it happens and I see it happen officially and to the Sporting Post.
The effect is seen as soon as a visitor comes and the MR creep destroys the locals. It is something the handicapper can and should fix.
