STAR BROODMARE SIRES REPRESENTED ON MARE SALE

Some of South Africa’s very finest broodmare sires will be represented by daughters at the 2013 Mare and Weanling Sale. The sale, set to take place at Kleinplasie in Worcester, on May 23rd, will see 177 lots go through the ring.
Of these, 153 are broodmares, or potential broodmare prospects.
But which local broodmare sires do well when mated to which sires? This is a question for the ages!
Al Mufti
A truly great sire and broodmare sire, Al Mufti is the broodmare sire of 36 stakes winners, of which 25 are graded winners.
His daughters have done well when mated to Silvano, with that cross producing two Equus champions in Bold Silvano and Kings Gambit respectively. Al Mufti has also done when his daughters are mated to Jet Master, with that cross produced the graded stakes winners Little Miss Magic and Vertical Takeoff, and Lecture has also done when mated to Al Mufti mares.
He has 3 daughters on sale – lots 9,21,51.
Argosy
Few daughters of this Affirmed horse remain. Argosy did well as a broodmare sire, with his daughters throwing such Gr1 winners as Amberpondo, Ethereal Lady and Vega, to name a few. Argosy mares have done well with Captain Al, with the mating producing such stakes winner as Alluvial and Cool Zone. Argosy mares have produced 19 stakes winners, and 11 graded victors.
He has 1 daughter on sale – lot 56.
Badger Land
A truly great sire, Badger Land has also done really well as the maternal grandsire of such Gr1 winners as Captain’s Lover, Ebony Flyer and Rebel King. The latter is now an extremely promising young sire. Badger Land daughters have produced 36 stakes winners, who earned over $25 000 000. They have done well when mated to Captain Al (Captain’s Lover, Captain Scott, Princess Alberta) Western Winter (My Kazzie, Master Mascus, On Her Toes), and Silvano (Happy Spirit, We Three).
He has 2 daughters on sale – lots 41, 54.
Caesour
Recently deceased, Caesour is the broodmare sire of several top-class performers, including Equus Champion Dancewiththedevil (Modus Vivendi), who has since been exported to Britain. Other top-class performers out of Caesour mares include Tales of Bravery (Kahal), Emerald Cove (Captain Al) and Royal Bencher (Greys Inn).
He has 5 daughters on sale – lots 80,126, 130,136, 139.
Captain Al
A multiple champion sire of juveniles, Captain Al is showing tremendous promise as a broodmare sire. With his oldest daughters just ten, they have already produced the top-class stakes winners Potent Power (National Emblem) and Flash Drive (Jay Peg).
He has 7 daughters on sale – lots 11,25,27, 45,70, 119, 132.
Casey Tibbs
A fairly young broodmare sire, Casey Tibbs is already the broodmare sire of this season’s top-class G1 filly, Do You Remember. The latter is by leading sire Silvano, and Casey is also broodmare sire of the stakes performer Not Liable (Lundy’s Liability).
He has 1 daughter on sale – lot 17.
Complete Warrior
Another who has few remaining daughters, Complete Warrior is best known as a broodmare sire for producing champion sire Captain Al. In total, Complete Warrior mares have bred 24 stakes winners including the G1 winners Shadow Dancing (Fort Wood), Geepee S (Goldkeeper), Ivory Trail (Badger’s Drift), Villandry (Var), and Spiced Gold (Kahal). Complete Warrior mares have bred four stakes winners when mated to Al Mufti or his son Captain Al.

Elliodor
One of the truly great broodmare sires in South Africa’s recent history. Elliodor mares have built up a superb record, and, to date, have bred over 60 individual stakes winners. Elliodor daughters have produced eight G1 winners – Aslan (Silvano), Cordocelli (Cordoba), Dog Wood (Fort Wood), Donatella (Fine Edge), Exhilaration (Captain Al), Outcome (Muhtafal), Trademark (Goldmark) and Val de Ra (Var). Other stars out of Elliodor mares include world class sprinter Tiza (Goldkeeper) and Oaks winner Studio Fifty Four (Badger Land).

Fine Edge
A great outcross for Northern Dancer/Mr Prospector line mares, Fine Edge is the broodmare sire of this season’s high-class sprinter Sharp Design. His daughters have done well when mated with Jallad (Royal Opinion, Alvilda), Parader Leader (Senor Versace) and Count Dubois (State Crown).
He has one daughter on sale – lot 70.
Fort Wood
He is currently South Africa’s leading broodmare sire, and is responsible this season for both the leading 3yo colt (Capetown Noir) and 3yo filly (Cherry On the Top). Fort Wood’s other stakes winners include Gr2 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf winner Pluck (More Than Ready) and G1 winners Thunder Dance (Jet Master), Mokaro (Manaloj), Royal Fantasy (Al Mufti), and Bouquet-Garni (Strike Smartly). Fort Wood mares have done well when mated to Al Mufti or Captain Al, this mating producing six stakes winners, including the promising 2yo Wheredowego (Kenilworth Fillies Nursery). Fort Wood mares also do well when mated to Silvano and Strike Smartly. The latter mating has produced six stakes winners, including 2013 stakes horses Cherry On The Cake and General Sherman.

Goldmark
Goldmark, a former champion son of top broodmare sire Golden Thatch, is best known as the broodmare sire of July winner, and ill-fated champion, Big City Life (Casey Tibbs). His daughters have done well with Casey Tibbs – with the mating also having produced G3 winners Cash Register and Cree Lodge. Sons of Sadler’s Wells do well with Goldmark mares – this mating has also bred Gr2 winner and July third Chesalon.

Jallad
A former champion sire, Jallad has enjoyed a great year as a broodmare sire, with his daughters producing the likes of Gr1 J&B Met winner Martial Eagle (SIlvano), Dubai Gr1 winner Shea Shea (National Emblem) and Dubai winner Royal Ridge (Tiger Ridge). His daughters have also produced such high-class performers as Solo Traveller (Western Winter), Give Me Five (Goldkeeper), Port of London (London News), and Red Dor (Right Approach).

Jet Master
A multiple champion sire, Jet Master is the broodmare sire of stakes placed runners by Trippi, Dupont, Casino Prince (AUS), Silvano and Mullins Bay.

The son of Danzig is the damsire of the stakes winners Victorian Secret (Captain Al) and Calanish (Lecture).

An increasing successful broodmare sire, National Assembly is damsire of this year’s unbeaten Guineas winner Vercingetorix (Silvano). His daughters have produced 26 stakes winners including champion filly Laverna (Parade Leader). He has done well when his daughters are mated to Captain Al – that cross has produced 3 stakes winners. National Assembly mares, when mated to Muhtafal, have produced the stakes winners Fair Brutus, Battlestar Express and Nottgalashia. Trippi, when mated to his daughters, has produced the quick fillies Agra and Franny.

National Emblem
Broodmare sire of this season’s Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes winner Only Emily (Captain Al), National Emblem daughters have also bred this season’s Gr3 Sycamore Sprint winner Kinematic Countess (Count Dubois) and Gr2 winner Oracle News (London News). When mated to Captain Al, National Emblem mares have bred 3 black type performers.

Rakeen
The sire of Jet Master has done well as a broodmare sire, with his daughters producing the likes of champion Princess Victoria (Victory Moon), G1 winner Far de Vie (Fard), and Gr3 winner Sedge (Silvano). As a broodmare sire, Rakeen’s 10 stakes winners are all by different sires, but he is broodmare sire of 3 stakes performers by Al Mufti sons.

CLASSY MARES HIGHLIGHT CAPE SALE
There is a great variety of fillies and mares on offer at the 2013 Cape Mare And Weanling Sale.
The sale, which will be held at Kleinplasie in Worcester on May 23rd, is due to kick off at 10:00 am. It will be followed by the Novisara Dispersal Sale, which has 40 lots catalogued to sell.
A champagne breakfast will be served at 9:30 am.
On offer, are a number of Gr1 racemares and producers, as well as numerous stakes producing broodmares, and well bred weanlings. There are weanlings on the Cape Sale by such fashionable sires as Black Minnaloushe, Count Dubois, Jay Peg, Judpot, Rebel King, Seventh Rock and Warm White Night.
Novisara’s Dispersal offers a rare opportunity to purchase a weanling by the top-class, but ill-fated, performer Bankable.

Cape Mare and Weanling Sale
Lot 4 – a winning half-sister to Gr3 winner Far Under Par, the National Emblem daughter National Leader sells in foal to exciting young sire Ashaawes.
Lot 7 Part des Anges is a winning Var half-sister to this season’s Gr3 winner A Boy Named Sue. She sells in foal to L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight.
Lot 12 Rahy Cashmere is a winning daughter of the great sire and broodmare sire Rahy. From the international family of G1 winners Goodbye Halo and Val’s Prince, she is in foal to proven sire Philanthropist.
