Opening meeting at Champ de Mar in Ile Maurice, it would be wise to tread warily as all runners back from a holiday and whilst some perform first up there are always those who need a run or two before peaking?

Best to stay out this meeting.

Mauritius Turf Club website:

The match of the day : Besugo v/s Ghost Dog

The match of the day will oppose the Patrick Merven trained Besugo to the Gilbert Rousset trained Ghost Dog in the 4th contest of the opening meeting of the 2013 season. On South African form, Besugo has the edge whereas on his Mauritian form, Ghost Dog has been very consistent and his connections think that he can score his third win with Johnny Geroudis on board.

Patrick Merven said that his horse has done nothing wrong in his two first races in Mauritius last year. He finished 4th behind Southern Heights on his debut and scored in his last outing with Nooresh Juglall on board, beating Al’s Deputy by 2,20 lengths.

‘‘His track work has been excellent’’, said Patrick Merven, who believes that Besugo has the class to overshadow Ghost Dog as he is running in a lower class, whereas the latter is in an upper division.

Ghost Dog was seen this morning in a cracking form and there has been a lot of support for him in the betting. The two horses are now joint favourites.

Besugo will try to dictate his pace but he won’t have an easy task as Gilbert Rousset has also Seeking Angelo (Teeha) in this 1500m race. The latter is quite speedy and could be a threat to Besugo in the earlier stages.

Inside Out (Faucon) and The Last Samurai (Burke) are two other speedy sorts that could well try to keep their position, having both drawn well.

So, who will win the match of the day? Even though there has been a lot of money on Ghost Dog, we believe that Besugo must be followed with confidence. He will have our vote.
