Crabbia/ Ennion Split
12 years 2 months ago
I found this article in the Tabgold website
MICHAEL CLOWER
Leading owner Fred Crabbia has split with Cape Town trainer Greg Ennion and has removed all the 27 horses he had at the Milnerton yard including stable star Master Plan.
Last season’s Champions Cup and Betting World Derby winner, together with four others, joins Alec Laird at Randjesfontein near Johannesburg.
One horse has gone to Gavin Smith in Port Elizabeth and the remainder stay in Cape Town but have been divided between Dean Kannemeyer, Vaughan Marshall and Justin Snaith.
Crabbia, who has had over 50 winners this season and is second on the races-won national log, originally informed Ennion that he was taking away 20 horses and was leaving seven with him including Golden Horseshoe runner-up Shimmer And Shine. But last Thursday Ennion rang him back and told him to take them all away.
Ennion said: “I have my pride to consider. But it’s tough for any trainer to lose that many horses and I am disappointed because there are some very decent ones among them. However Fred’s action did not come as any great surprise because he has a reputation for moving his horses.”
Crabbia believes there will be more opportunities for the Laird-bound quintet in Gauteng but seemingly Master Plan’s poor performance in the J&B Met has a lot to do with the Johannesburg businessman’s decision.
The gelding wore special surgical shoes to protect the soles of his front feet but somehow managed to tear them off as he burst out of the pens and he finished with only one behind him.
Crabbia said: “I rate this horse very highly and we were bitterly disappointed. I felt that it wouldn’t have been a race had he had shoes on.
“I believe that horses should never lose shoes at the start and that it was crazy putting a horse into a big race when you hadn’t tried that type in any other race previously. It was like expecting a ballerina to wear brand new shoes for the first time in an actual performance.
“I feel that there is a lot more potential in Johannesburg and that the scope for him up here is a lot bigger. I want him to be got ready for the R2 million President’s Champions Challenge at Turffontein on April 27 and then the Durban July.
“Greg is a good horseman but I am trying to get my horses with other trainers who have been in the game for a long time.”
Ennion, whose stable has been cut to 26, countered: “We couldn’t fit those shoes in any previous race because the problem didn’t show up until shortly before the Met. In any case that type of shoe has been widely used and Pocket Power wore them to win the Met.
“What happened was that Master Plan put his head down as he came out of the pens and thrust his back feet right forward, ripping off the front shoes.”

Greg horrible news when a owner bolts, leaving you with a few crumbs, but well done on holding your pride in place and telling him to clear out,big balls needed and it won't take long before the empty bucket fills up again.

I am with Crabbia here . He has shuffled his horses all over the country and it has brought him improved results almost every time . As for this statement “We couldn’t fit those shoes in any previous race because the problem didn’t show up until shortly before the Met. , i may be wrong but i recall the trainer being aware of this problem way before the met (mentioned on tellytrack when they did a show about that yard).
At the end of it all ,its the owner that pays the bills and i think Crabbia has long been in the game and has a fair idea of how to manage his string !

JUst the other day Crabbia was kissing ennions arse saying what a great trainer he is.
The other day Sean Tarry was a superstar trainer.
In Alec Laird they will last less than 6 months maybe till end of Durban season.
in Justin Snaith maybe 1 year before Fred can them to
i think Charles might last the longest.
with charles the horses race often earn cheques,no rest time alec who knows.
i think there will be a new trainer for Crabbia soon maybe the racing manager Emma will apply for trainers license colours soon.
its not April fools yet
lol

Good Morning Zen!
Has Crabbia or any of his trainers ever come onto this site or gone to the public to tell us about his horses well-being (not a 'tip' like from RubyClipper)?
We should be pretty honest and give a sh.t for owners who are just in the game (with their 'years of involvement' or loaded with moolla), who give a shit for the punter / public.
They (most) only in it to get the maximum out for themselves at our expense who provide the stakes fodder!
Am I wrong?
Viva the Shams, Craigs, etc! They keep the game alive like no other! They don't regard themselves as demi-gods or inaccessible!

The way he moves from trainer to trainer shows he doesn't knows how to manage a string of horses ??

Still going strong. I think 20 years and counting.
Fair to say Shaw has brought him the most sucess locally and abroad.
