The UAE 1000 guineas is a listed contest for 3 year old fillies on the Tapeta surface. First things first, I don’t personally think that is all that strong a field.
The two fancied runners in this race are Music Chart from the Godolphin yard of Mohammed Al Zarooni and Emotif for South African trainer Mike De Kock. I am not in the least surprised to see this pair at the head of the market given their connections and especially Music Chart as she won the trial race here last week a shade cosily. Today she is stepped back up in trip to 8 furlongs and it is over this trip last season that she was beaten by her stablemate Lovely Pass. Music Chart is clearly an improving horse and will definitely be even stronger with an extra furlong very much in her favour but I will not be backing her.
Mike De Kock’s horses have needed their first outing at this year’s carnival before finding their feet, highlighted last week when he landed a treble. The obvious exception to that is Soft Falling Rain who absolutely bolted up first time out here but he had group winning experience behind him back her in South Africa. Emotif could be anything having been sent to Dubai off the back of a debut win but against a field of horses who have a run behind them, at odds of 9/4 I couldn’t be backing her.
I ruled out Shureq and More Than Sotka as they were both beaten by Music Chart last week and I can’t see either of them reversing that form, especially over the extra furlong.
I will give a small mention to a horse that I rate very highly in Pure Excellence but I can’t see her winning today. On her first run here and given her trainer’s poor record here in recent years, it is hard to see her challenging.
Of the remainder of the field, only two others interest me in the slightest. The first of those two is My Special JJ’s who brings with her the strongest form on offer having won a Group 2 race over 7f back in Ireland and ran well in a Group 1 in France in very testing conditions over today’s trip. That said, she will have to come on a lot for her first run here in the trial last week as she was well beaten by Music Chart and Shureq that day, although she was carrying a penalty of 5 pound which would have made life a bit more difficult for her.
The other horse that catches my eye is Lovely Pass, who on paper appears to be the third string for the Godolphin stable. She won her maiden very comfortably over 6 furlongs before being thrown straight into a Listed contest at Ascot. She was upped in trip that day and despite being outpaced, she battled on to secure the 2nd spot in behind her stablemate Tha’ir, who has since won a listed contest and placed twice at Group level. I can put a line through her next run as she was dropped back to 6 furlongs in horrible testing conditions and hated every minute of it. Her latest run was when she beat stablemate Music Chart over the mile trip at Ascot on much better ground. It is easy to argue that she had the run of the race but once she hit the front, she kept on going and extended her lead in the final furlong when the challengers tried to close on her. I was very impressed with that performance as not only did she comfortably take care of the challenge of her two more fancied stablemates but also the joint favourite from the John Gosden yard.
Conclusion
My selection is Lovely Pass. As mentioned above, she appears to be the stable third string but I am not convinced by this. Yes she carries the red cap but that is to do with jockey bookings and as Silvestre De Sousa and Mickael Barzelona ride Shuruq and Music Chart respectively, Lovely Pass was always going to carry the third colours. One thing I have noticed with the Godolphin runners is that they are big on the relationship a jockey has with a horse, highlighted last week when Ted Durcan kept the ride on Kassiano and duly obliged, having ridden him the week previous. When winning on her last outing, Ahmed Ajtebi was the man in the saddle.
Yes Music Chart will improve again no doubt but I see no reason why Lovely Pass won’t be able to confirm form with her, if given an equally as impressive ride as she was that day. Her sire is Raven’s Pass who won the Breeders Cup Classic on the synthetic surface so there is plenty of reason to expect her to handle the Tapeta surface sufficiently

I do hope this is right ... we had a power cut 3 minutes before the race so I missed it ... got rather a shock when I finally picked up the result online. Emotif comes in, what? Sixth? To get beaten wouldn't have surprised me as everything there was strange to her and she's only raced once. Strange track, strange handlers, jockey, other unknown horses around her ... she must have been as nervous as a cat at Crufts.
But I did think she could have run a place at least.
