BSA GRADS TAKE G1 HATRICK ON MET DAY
Saturday was one to remember for BloodStock South Africa. Three of BSA’s former graduates captured Gr1 feature races on J&B Met day at Kenilworth racecourse.
The hatrick was kicked off by the brilliant colt Capetown Noir capturing the historic, Gr1 Investec Cape Derby. This race has been won by numerous champions in the past, and Capetown Noir is fully deserving of his place in this prestigious line up of stars.
The colt, who had previously won the Gr1 Cape Premier Yearling Sales Guineas, has now won five of his seven starts, and is clearly the leader of his generation. Bred by Lammerskraal Stud, Capetown Noir (Western Winter – Akinfeet) was a R1 000 000 purchase at the 2011 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Well done to winning owner, Lady Christine Laidlaw, who owns this budding young champion. A magnificent looking colt, Capetown Noir has the racing ability and pedigree to be an extremely valuable stud prospect once his racing career winds down. This champion colt has a Parade Leader half-sister entered on the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
The second BSA grad to capture a Gr1 race this past weekend was the blue blooded Blueridge Mountain. She won her maiden Gr1 victory when landing the Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, under a superb ride from champion Anton Marcus.
Blueridge Mountain, who had previously won the Gr2 Sceptre Stakes, was a R2 000 000 buy at the 2011 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, when consigned by Summerhill.
Well done to winning owners, Markus and Ingrid Jooste, and to successful breeders, Phalaris Breeding Ltd. The filly, who stamped herself as one of the most exciting fillies in South Africa, is by Horse of the Year and champion US sire, Giant’s Causeway. From a world class female line, Blueridge Mountain has now won three of six starts, and been placed twice. She looks very special!
Excitingly, Blueridge Mountain has a half-brother, by leading Argentinian sire Equal Stripes, entered on the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
The final BSA grad to win at the highest level on Saturday was Martial Eagle, who won the R2,500,000 J&B Met – the Cape’s biggest, and most famous, horse race. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift, Martial Eagle was a R300 000 buy at the 2007 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. He has now earned over R1,900,000 in prize money.
Well done to winning owner Sabine Plattner, and to trainer Yogas Govender. Martial Eagle is by outstanding racehorse and sire Silvano, out of the smart Jallad mare, Seeking The Wind.
Bloodstock South Africa would like to wish the connections of these superb racehorses well for winning on one of South Africa’s biggest race days. May they continue to perform and excel at the very highest levels.
