Fact remains - he ran in a G1 over 2000m and won...
another race, another result, but he's got it under the belt...

The official MR handicap gives a single rating to a horse, which is earned over it's best trip, but then is used for MR handicap races over all distances. There are often useful betting opportunities if you record appropriate ratings over various distances (and in some cases different courses)
As Rob points out above, CTN was 10 lb clear of the Derby field on his Guineas rating but the next three ran within 2 lb of him in the Derby. They didn't all improve 10 lb so he ran well below his previous. However the added complication is that it was a slow run race which was decided in the sprint up the straight and false pace races are notoriously hard to rate correctly.
He did what he needed to do to win, but the key question of exactly how good he is over 2000m remains unanswered.
The Guineas Derby double has only been done by serious racehorses so I give him utmost respect until proved otherwise.

Absolutely true Peter D.
My assessment is by no means conclusive or gospel............just the best facts I have until more races(info) unfolds ..........and I have found over the years that facts are generally the most reliable evidence.

If we can agree that a good miler is a horse who is better over a mile than over further, say like Variety Club seems to be on exposed form, then I have to agree that some great milers can win a July...sometimes.
But Royal Chalice and Over The Air are great milers, then Dynasty, Pocket Power and even In Full Flight are not Mile specialists. Even Flaming Rock won the July, ran 2nd and 3rd in two other July's, ran 2nd, 2nd and 3rd in Mets against the likes of Empress Club. He was too good to be limited by the Miler classification if you mean it as a limit.
You can't call pocket Power who won the MET 3 times a Miler.
Dynasty who only ran 12 times, ran 3 races further than 1600m, and won The Derby, The Daily News and The July. A full brother to a 3200m horse, extremely stoutly bred and the sire of a Gold Cup winner in his first crop, is probably not a miler. i think the fact is quite rarely, a very good "miler" can win the July..say once in a blue moon.

How many horses in the history of these two races (Guineas and Derby CPT) has won both of them ? Capetown Noir is a brilliant animal and probably our new champion, esp if I look at the horses that took part in the Met (must be one of the weakest Met's ever !!). He will only come on from this season's runs and would be my bet for the July.

The lack of pace is the worst variable in horseracing. It is worse than the draw, the going or the weight they carry on their backs. It is the worst...

He will run over a 1600m next time and if you do that, you will be in the poor house

GG, I was just stirring mate.lol.
I believe that Martial Eagle wouldve beaten any horse in that race on the day.
Was ridden to perfection by Aldo and was prepped to perfection by Yogas.
I jusr wish I had taken notice of the prep b4 the race not after.lol

How many grade 1 mile races did pocket power win? I reckon you can call him a great miler any time of day
