STANGER HIGH: CALLING CLASS OF 1963 FOR REUNION :)-D

The class of 1963 at Stanger High School was one of its kind and has seen many distinguished names, amongst them Dr RP Juggath, who must be well-known to some forumites.

One highlight is that we made the front page of the Post with 'Hic Hic Hurrah' where matriculants got sloshed on the last day!

The other was the involvement of yours truly, Yunus Mahomed and late Mogambharan Padayachee in plastering the then whites only swimming pool with graffitti 'Hang Vorster! Free Mandela!' and 'Down with Apartheid! Viva ANC!', etc, including on the walls of buildings in the town centre. To this day, nobody knew who was behind it!

A 50 year get-together is planned for next year and we are calling upon class-mates to pitch up.

Kindly contact Dr Juggath.....

Hope you have a great meeting, but if I think back to these so called freedom days ....I just remember innocent people dying, like the Magoo's bar in Durban.....So if you announce your reunion, why bring in all the hatred, from back then. Why can't you just mention memorable times achieved in sports or something else....why alway's politics. For fark sake, move on

A qualified.....nooooooooNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

@
'why alway's politics. For fark sake, move on'

That's what made us (politics!); regrettably, not all of us cut from the same cloth!

Yes, murdering of innocents (on both sides) was not on.

Many of us have stretched out our hands with olive branches.... others have not and I will not speak for them!

'Why can't you just mention memorable times achieved in sports or something else....why alway's politics.'

with due respects, 'apartheid' and 'politics' have left most of us mentally & emotionally crippled.

You mentioned 'sports'.... what sports?

In those days, schools were financed as ff:

1. Whites,
all amenities (rugby ground with floodlights, cricket & soccer fields, tennis courts, swimming pools, tennis courts, etc), all fitted and fully equipped with full-time coaches, especially for rugby and cricket. All provided by the Government and the rates, electricity and rates subsidised by the local municipality. Plus, the kids never paid school fees and all books were provided gratis. The school built by Province (Dept of Education).

Herein, directly opposite our school was the Stanger Country Club which housed a public swimming pool, cricket and rugby grounds, tennis courts, squash, bowling green and a golf course; all maintained and run by the municipality..... FOR WHITES ONLY!

2. Coloureds
Schools provided by Government with just the basic amenities; hardly any sports ground or sporting facilities. Parents paid for school books.

3.
Indians
Had what was called 'Government Aided' schools. The local community would raise funds and Government would match Rand for Rand for the building of the school/s. The sports facilities depended on what the parents/community raised.

In most instances a cricket pitch and soccer field were incorporated into one. They had a Hobson's choice; cricket in summer and soccer in winter!

'Apartheid' created its own enclave of internal racists as a result of the above. The different races never mixed in sport, hence Hassan Howa's famous words 'No normal sport in an abnormal society'! (Today, horseracing is 'an abnormal sport in a normal society'! Lol!)
That also resulted in the various communities asserting their own identities.

Amongst whites, English and Germans were seen as the 'superior' ones, with the bumbling Afrikaner in Government who took his cue from the capitalists (like what the ANC is in now).

The Afrikaners in turn regarded this country as their blood and sweat-earned right (Anglo-Boers wars where Afrikaners were confined to concentration camps and humiliated) over fellow whites, such as Jews, Greeks and 'Poras'.... and often subjected them to discrimination/taunts.

Coloureds mostly saw themselves as more privileged than Indians and Africans, and maintained their distances from us.
Indians also dissected themselves into enclaves. We had soccer and cricket teams that comprised of only Muslims, Tamil-speakers, Hindi-speakers and Christians, etc. Similar situations were found in work places environments.

4. Africans
As for Africans,......... did they matter? They were seen as being perpetually at loggerheads against one another (Zulu and Xhosa) and consigned to their 'homelands'! Besides, they were subjected to the daily calumny of producing the 'dompaas', restricted in movement, their curriculum ensured that they learn that much and no more to remain fodder for cheap labour exploitation by the mining groups and industry..., etc.

At one time, Communism was seen as the bogeyman; then radical Islam.

We in this country (especially blacks) see 'apartheid as the bogeyman that's messing up our lives; not corruption, nepotism, inefficiency...!!!!

So, let's get onto the path to find one another and respect where we all come from!

I am open to criticism and willing to learn, understand, should anyone feel I have erred. Besides, I am no expert.... just what I experienced, saw and feel.....most importantly, what has moulded me into what I am today!
Amandla!

'....would you not agree that the BEE being implemented is equally as deplorable and simply apartheid painted a different color (pun intended)'

fully agree (and have been pretty vociferous on that score!)!

Read 'in Government who took his cue from the capitalists (like what the ANC is in now).'

Glad Im not alone in my thinking :) I lost a good mate in the toti wimpy blast..ironically he had been released from the Wynburg DB in November '85 having spent 3 years after being branded a "conscientiousness objector" for refusing to partake in the then compulsory SADF military training..I believe that Andre Zondo later stated that the blast was in retaliation for a SADF raid into Lesotho, a lot of innocent lives lost from both sides being caught in the cross fire so to speak.
