PJ Prepares for his date with Dynasty jnr :)
12 years 11 months agoFarrier Manelisi Ndlebe shoes Vodacom Durban July hopeful Pierre Jourdan. Holding the gentle giant is Kangalane Mnini who is also an assistant farrier. Assistant trainer Ashleigh Hughes said the horse was sound and in with a big chance to take the annual race day highlight on Saturday.
Manicures, shampoos and facials for days on end are often the reserve of film stars, but this week the stars are horses, and they are getting all the attention reserved for the most famed celebs.
Ashleigh Hughes, assistant trainer to Gary Alexander who is tasked with preparing “the people’s horse”, Pierre Jourdan, for the Vodacom Durban July, croons and clucks as the finely bred gelding gets a new set of shoes. But the shiny bay, which was the runner-up to Mike de Kock’s Igugu last year, is completely unfazed as he gently shakes his head from side to side to rid himself of a lazy fly. And once the shoes are nailed in place, Hughes gets out the oil and a paintbrush to coat each dainty hoof.
“Do you know he has hundreds of facebook fans?” she says. “He is so quiet and relaxed and has excellent stable manners,” she smiles.
But behind those dozy eyes it is clear there is power aplenty – he is carrying the top weight and is drawn at 15.
The horse was bred at Summerhill in the Midlands and, says Hughes, will show his greatness at the Durban July on Saturday.
“He ran so well at the gallops last week. Everybody was saying how well he was striding out – we are confident he is going to win,” she said.

...she looks very forward for a recent maiden winner....PJ Gallop was not bad at all.....I did not agree with some of those training eggsPurts that say PJ"S prep all wrong this year.....not all use the same book.... and imo PJ has a better prep than that of last year as his pipe opener was at altitude last year and even MDK rubbished him because he got beat by his mare.....that run behind VC over the mile is more PJ's style and now finally that the scoops are in the trash can.....he can easy triumph in what could be a rough run race......there is going to be a lot of early bumping and grinding for the top draws to get to better positions....luck in running is the order of the race and drawn midfield he should run at them from just off the pace....
