@gregbucks:

'Time the ANC starts firing incompetent ministers, starting with Angie Motshekga... Lets see if they have any balls.'

The only balls they now have is for popping into dugout holes!

There is far too much of tribalism, racism (reberse) and factionalism for the ANC to ever again present a united front; each group protects its own interests, competent or not! Vavi says one thing, Sisulu another, Zuma on '2nd transition', ANCYL on nationalisation... then Sexwale calls to order (and is booed)!

I doubt if within the 'apartheid' parliament and Government (besides the Indian tri-cam's Rajbansis), we had such deep-seated nepostism and in-breeding (husband and wife, brother and sister, mother and sibling, etc)!

Cry the tenderised country!

As long as there are pigs feeding from the trough, and I have got agree with you Umlilo on the novel "Pigs Farrm", sorry "Animal Farm",

Perhaps we start with getting our misadmistarator of miseducation to start with the word EDUCATION, It is a western word, so probably a bit difficult to undrerstand or pronounce

And then we have our president, with all his underlings(he is a man of power after all), what with all his wives been taken care off with tax payers money.

IS this what we have to settle for.....I Don't think so.

Hard to understand, why a nation is living in poverty, when there are so many overweight leaders around.....too much western influence, perhaps, while you continue to blame all of Africa's problems on western influence, yet our leaders can wear western made suits, live the western way of life, and still want to use the excuse, that THIS IS MY CULTURE....oh and I forget about th R2b jet to escort our influential and respected president around the world.

Here is a question for our leaders, WHat do you do, when the taxpayers decided they had enough, probably do the chicken run, because you already have your offshore accounts . Well if lining your pockets was your sole ambition, then get the hell out of here, you have already stolen more than you can spend.

Now let the people who care, make this a great country.

To all those in authority, RESPECT IS EARNED, NOT BY THOSE WHO BY THEIR AUTHOURITY!, COMMAND RESPECTIVE, BUT BY THOSE WHO EARN THAT RESPECT

@Observer1:

'while you continue to blame all of Africa's problems on western influence, yet our leaders can wear western made suits, live the western way of life, and still want to use the excuse, that THIS IS MY CULTURE....'

AND even most of the senior politician's children (including the President's) cannot even speak or understand a word of their own language.

Where are our enterprisingf journos to go out and test them and report their findings (that's if I'm talking sh..t)?

What is intriguing is that there are so many ex-activists (not just MK veterans) who remain silent; the same people who were so vociferous during the struggle days! Much as some may not agree with me; the only credibles in my book...... late Fathima Meer and Mama Winnie (as much as one may have other views)!

It also is a poor reflection that many of my former struggle comrades (communists and socialists) are now capitalists and socialites to whom even I cannot get through today!

Damning is the boss himself who was so keen to send me to Maputo to meet the Finance Minister (the man, circa 1998) wanted us to deposit R40 000 into his son's account in Jhb before he started talking to us!) to 'finalise' a deal for property development, precious and other minerals, bus routes, etc during those early days!

But then, of course, these are now untouchables and we have no credibility!

More equal than.....!!!

The bad thing PeeKay is that they'll never lose. It's a democracy as long as they're winning and they have a huge numerical (unfortunately racial) advantage. I'm convinced that they'll never lose as they'll become another Zanu PF, once or if ever their electorate manage to see through the lines and realise that they can manage their own and children's futures better than they are right now.

Johannesburg - The basic education department failed to comply with a court order to meet its textbook delivery deadline, legal NGO Section27 said on Monday.

"On the first day of a new [school] term, there is a risk that many learners still remain without textbooks or with insufficient textbooks," Section27 executive director Mark Heywood said in Johannesburg.

He was briefing reporters on a report on the late delivery of textbooks in Limpopo.

"We accept that all... figures [in the report] require further verification. But on these facts the department of basic education remains in violation of the court order. This needs very urgent remedy."

The report, by former education director general Mary Metcalfe, found that despite the extended date for the delivery of textbooks, June 27, the department's assertion that 98% of the books were delivered was partially incorrect.

"Professor Metcalfe's report shows that on 27th June, only 15% of books had been delivered to schools. By July 3 this had increased to 48%. According to the report, by July 11, 22% of the sample schools were still awaiting textbooks," Heywood said.

Section27 accepted the recommendations made by Metcalfe in the report, and called for their "urgent implementation".

'Department is rotten'

"It is very clear from this and other reports that the Limpopo education department is rotten, riven [rife] with corruption and incapable of meeting its constitutional obligation to learners," Heywood said.

"We call for the department to be cleaned out, for the vigorous prosecution of charges of corruption, for maximum openness about those charged, and for the [Limpopo] MEC for basic education, Dickson Masemola, to be fired."

He said the "crisis" was not Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga's sole responsibility.

Basic education spokesperson Panyaza Lesufi said the department accepted the report and would work to implement its recommendations.

"We await further reports to make an accurate assessment on the matter. We are going to Limpopo to count each and every learner and teacher to ensure that this situation does not happen again."

Section27 had taken the department to court to force it to deliver the books, after some schools in the province had been without them for seven months.

The Metcalfe report was compiled in response to the department's assertion that 98% of the books were delivered.

A presidential task team and the Limpopo government were also conducting their own investigations into the situation, which had been accompanied by media reports of textbook dumping, irregular ordering and tender processes.

Bunch of thieving crooks running this country and that Zuma has no balls to fire this corrupt lot.

wow - I remember we got our books in the first two days- used books - I'm sure someone is making money out of selling textbooks to the Gov - Surely last year's books are still good for this year? Do the kids throw them away in December - Something is rotten in the Department - I still have a copy of Hamlet at home wonder if it has been replaced with a revised version?

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma has received a preliminary report from a presidential task team that investigated the late delivery of textbooks in Limpopo, the presidency said on Monday.

"The president appointed the task team to investigate every aspect of the failure of delivery of learners' textbooks in the Limpopo province," it said in a statement.

"He is studying the report and has urged the task team to continue and conclude its work without any further delay. President Zuma will pronounce on the report once the matter has been concluded."

African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Monday that the late delivery was a "serious failure" by the government.

He said all task teams investigating the saga needed to reconcile their reports to the presidential task team.

"That final report should be the basis for any action to be taken, including action against any person found guilty of any misdemeanour," Mantashe said.

Many organisations and people, including the African National Congress Youth League and the Congress of SA Trade Unions, held Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga responsible for the saga and had called for her axing.

Former education director general Mary Metcalfe compiled a report on the matter, in response to the department's assertion that 98% of textbooks were delivered to Limpopo schools, after they had been waiting to receive them for the past seven months.

It found that despite the extended date for delivery of textbooks, 27 June, the department's assertion that 98% of the books were delivered was incorrect.

Cape Town - Nobel literature prize winner Nadine Gordimer poured scorn on South Africa's education system on Tuesday as "a wreck" over the failure to deliver textbooks to thousands of public schools.

The scandal has caused a national furore after leaving more than 5 000 rural schools without textbooks for more than six months of the academic year in a damning measure of the country's schooling.

"Our education system is a wreck. It's a shamble. I can't believe that three-quarters of the year have gone by and so many of our schools, especially in the rural areas, have been without textbooks," said Gordimer, 88, on SAfm public radio news.

"It is the (education) minister's responsibility to see that the books are ordered in time and delivered. How can you teach people to read if there are no books to read from?"

President Jacob Zuma is facing increasing calls to fire Education Minister Angie Motshekga. On Monday, he said he was waiting for a final report from a team he appointed to investigate the debacle.

The education department was found to have violated students' rights to education after being taken to court and was ordered to remedy the situation.

But a probe revealed that 22% of schools in the northern Limpopo region were still without learning materials earlier this month despite a scramble by authorities to get the missing books to schools.

The criticism by Gordimer, who had several works banned by the apartheid regime, comes after peace laureate Desmond Tutu said democratic icon Nelson Mandela would be reduced to tears if he knew the poor state of public schools.

Education is South Africa's single biggest budget item, but schools are hobbled by poor management and low standards

Johannesburg - Great strides have been made in education, but the problems caused by the apartheid system still remain, Unisa council chairperson and ANC Treasurer Mathews Phosa said on Monday.

"We cannot ignore the devastating effects that the apartheid education system had on our people. We will not achieve any of our goals by looking back.

"We must look forward, and take full responsibility for the tasks assigned to us by the electorate."

He was speaking at the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute graduation in Pretoria.

He said these were issues inherent in the educational sphere and the discourse went beyond party politics.

Poverty remained a significant barrier to education.

"According to the SA Human Rights Commission, children in the poorest households are nearly three times less likely to complete secondary schooling, and for those who are able to attend school, the quality of education is not uniform.

"This has the possibility to affect children across the generations," said Phosa.
