Alec Laird won the Daily News 2000 with the great London News in 2006 before going on to win the Vodacom Durban July, but the focus for his charge Royal Bencher will be on the latter event this year and the Daily News 2000 is being viewed as a preparation run.

The Laird dynasty have been at the forefront of South African racing for over a century now, with his grandfather Alec riding Nobleman to victory in the July in 1911, the only two-year-old to ever win the race, his Uncle Syd Garret riding two July winners and training three, his father Syd Laird training a record seven July winners and himself and his cousins Charles Laird and Dennis Drier training one July winner each.

Between the cousins this season they have already notched up five Grade 1 winners, including Royal Bencher, who dead-heated with Pomodoro in the SA Derby, and many viewed him as unlucky to not be awarded the race on his own after an objection was lodged by the stipendiary stewards.

Royal Bencher arrived at Summerveld on Sunday, May 20, just before the Johannesburg frosts started.

Laird said that he had peaked him for the Derby and his aim would now be to get him to the Vodacom Durban July “in one piece.”

“The Daily News will be an opportunity to show him the track. It will be a preparation run and will show us how many lengths we will need to find on Jackson. It will be an exploratory run and I will be happy if we finish within six lengths of Jackson.”

At present Royal Bencher is merit rated eight points lower than Jackson, but how much weight he will receive in the July will depend on which horse ends up being topweight.

As it stands, if Pierre Jourdan is the topweight off his current 114 rating, Royal Bencher will only receive 2kg from Jackson because three-year-olds will then be capped at 57kg, but if Jackson ends up being topweight, Royal Bencher will receive 4kg from him.

Royal Bencher has improved since gelding and in the SA Derby on April 28 he showed a good turn of foot and proved that he is up for a fight, fending off Pomodoro and Brooks-Club for most of the length of the long Turffontein straight.

Even being bumped sideways just before the line didn’t halt his resolve.

He should be a fit horse and it would be no surprise to see him in the frame despite the yard not expecting him to perform a miracle by defeating Jackson.

An SA Derby-July double would be a remarkable feat as he is from the first crop of Grey’s Inn, who landed that very double in the 2004 season.

Dalakhani please put your glasses on and watch carefully tomorrow if you cant have Jackson you need to get to the nearest optomitrist very very urgently - or send me some of the stuff you are smoking - because he will silence your silly comment about not having him tomorrow. He is a top top top animal and will come home absolutely lonely

RS if you fancy Shogunnar then have a look at Swing The Sword in the 4th, this horses form is better than anything in the race, ran second to Shogunnar last time out....just has to overcome the draw... @ 9-1 is value imo...(tu)
