To have democracy you must have a) freedom of choice b) tolerence c) welfare state.
That is the people chose the government, the winners don't shoot the losers and the poor are taken care of..
But you have to create wealth first and then take care of the poor. If you try and do it the other way round, the system collapses. If however any of those ingredients is missing then it's no democracy or if you give it such a name, it will die soon.

Flush Harry, get rid of the mindset.

Here is something to think about, I did not benefit from apartheid, because I was not white. I did not hate the white man for this.

I grew up in a tin shanty township, no tarred roads, sharing a communal toilet and bathroom with cold water. Instead of blaming, I used every opportunity to educate myself, because that is the only freedom that matters, not when someone else tells you you are free.

The reality today, is as the article earlier states, there is a mentality of entitlement. In my books, you are not entitled to anything that you have not worked for, black, white or pink.

Perhaps you should open your eyes and see how this country's resources are been raped for the benefit of a bunch of so called self appointed freedom fighters...Moeltsi Mbeki, has the balls to see and state his views, and not blindly follow, because it is black brothers running (ruining) a beautiful country with so much of potential.

You see, I AM PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN as well.

The irony here is that during apartheid, a big issue was the inequality in the standard of education between race groups....well just what has the current government done to improve the education of the nation.....What they have done is lower the standard even more....keep the masses uneducated, and we will control them.

Time you recognized what we are faced with, with the current set of politicians ruling this country....they are nothing but a bunch of thieving, self serving con men, using state resources and tax payers money for self enrichment?

You want to be a true South African, then speak up and fight this scourge.

I wonder if it was dumb, I really do ... maybe they anticipated some such reaction? Maybe the DA hoped it might open a few eyes? Zille is nobody's fool and has more balls than any male politician in this country.

Agreed 100%.

I teach at a black university and every so often one sees someone like this ... not many, but enough to give one hope. Talked to one just this afternoon ... an old student of mine ... not a great brain but not thick either. Failed my course but he is determined to re-take it and pass ... just that his parents are dead and he has no-one to help financially. So he must do a course first that will get him a job and enough money to come back to U. I was moved by his quiet determination ... no fuss or drama ... just he will NOT give up his dream. Even though he has no money even for food.

Guys like this, as I say, give me hope that not everyone is gelded by the handout culture.

I sometimes wonder if HZ is not going about things the wrong way with regards to Cosatu. I know they disagree on a lot of things but there is clearly disagreements between Cosatu and the ANC and maybe it would be a good idea to exploit these disagreements by befriending Vavi and thereby driving a wedge between Cosatu and the ANC...

All so complicated..sad really..I made my mind up looong ago I am a South African and I will do what I can to provide jobs and transfer skills in a very technical field..I love this country with all our complexities however I really wish we could have a strong opposition party with a clear set of policies so politics befits this magic place.

SA has so much to offer..I have many many friends and colleagues overseas and they long to live here still..if we could just somehow all utilize the unbelievable entrepreneurial skills we have together this country would be unbeatable!

Rob, Vavi has accused Zille of trying to recruit him to the DA last year.

Accused? What's wrong with it ... if she did, I ask myself? Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much. However, for the time being, Vavi is stamped all over, front and back side, "Loyal Party Member" ... at least in public.

OR - You and your church community are doing far more than most and that's awesome. I am sure that the recpients of the goodwill have a different view on white SA. My contributions are not as grand. I takle these types of topics on forums such as these and elsewhere. I was recently lynched on a South Coast community Facebook forum. Not that I am shocked but it seems I almost live in a suburb of the backward. (Going down to Southpark going to find some friends of mine). Anyway I try not suffer fools indefinitely so I exited that group. I would have had more joy tryng to put my views accross my kitchen cupboard. I love the way the always start with "I am not a racist but....." Anyway my contribution is how I treat people at the counters of shops and waiters etc. You can see it in their eyes that you are going to behave in a typical white way, but when you dont they, warm up immediately. Change one mind at a time is my philosophy.

Oscar mentions policy and I do believe that the DA has a very clear policy on a way forward for SA. The ANC relies soley on its struggle historyand flipflops on issues. Cosatu should really consider going it alone. The DA and Cosatu will never work. The DA is in favour of merit appointments and development driven by market forces rather than state intervention whereas Cosatu seeks more state control. They may critisize the ANC on pushing a state driven agenda but it is only because they dislike the ANC cadre deployment policy. (Could be a case of missing the gravy train and they want their members in soft jobs).

Malema has done damage to the ANC, in fact I believe he has driven alot of voters into the DA's open arms. 2014 will prove this statement to be true. On the flipside the right wing element that is hiding out in the DA are not gong to like the new face of the DA and we should see increases in VF numbers. Unfortunately white SA s equally guilty of being poltically under educated and tend to vote for a party for the wrong reasons. Long term I believe we will live in a two party state which will be defined by economic policy before anything else. Communist / Socialists vs Free Market / Socialists. If the DA do get their number of black voters up, the idea of race based politics may be heading towards an end. Hooray for that!
