Mares racing when in foal

Quite a common thing in the uk for a horse to run or even win when in Foal, the 1st winner at Lingfield today won on the bridle (supported in the market as well).Don`t think i have ever heard of a mare running when in foal in South Africa?

i remember one winning a race in Cape Town - in nature zebra and horses don't stop running just cause they are pregnant but personally I would prefer that they would not race them

Ask the vets but as far as i know it is a common fact that a mare or filly in foal builds up such strength to prepare for the foal that they are at their best. Not all breeders do it but the vets hve told me it wont harm the foal.

It has happened in Cape Town and the mare actually won the race. Can't remember her name but can remember the explanation about her having a stonger blood flow during pregnancy.

in 2001 Cassandra Go, in foal to Green Desert, won the Kings Stand (then a G2) at Royal Ascot and ran 2nd to Mozart in G1 July Stakes. Partnered by Michael Roberts who rode her in 16 of her 17 starts. Has a top class record as a broodmare too.
