Appie allowance change

The National Horseracing Authority’s Board has agreed, following a motivation from the Board of the South African Jockeys Academy, to amend the Apprentice Allowances. The original recommendation arose from an Academy strategic session which was attended by a cross section of the racing community and after considering the Apprentice Allowances in other racing jurisdictions.

The present allowances are:

4kg until the apprentice has ridden 10 winners

2,5kg thereafter until he/she has ridden 30 winners

1,5kg thereafter until he/she has ridden 50 winners

The new allowances will be:
4kg until the apprentice has ridden 20 winners
2,5kg thereafter until he/she has ridden 40 winners

1,5kg thereafter until he/she has ridden 60 winners

This will bring the allowances in line with these other jurisdictions and will be of benefit to the development of apprentices in the current racing structure in South Africa.
Rule 54.14 will be amended accordingly and will be effective for all races for which entries are made on or after 1 May 2012.

@ Hibernia

Thanks for the info. Haven't weighed up all the pro's and cons but believe it will help the appies get the rides. Very good crop currently...IMO
