Objection in race 8; against the winner...didn't really seem like much though...

I was wrong; #5 is the winner and now I have the double running, picked up the wins, the exacta and the trifecta...:)

Funny guy you....

Actually the horse was named after a NHL star called Gordie Howe who played for the Detroit Redwings. He was regarded as one of the all time greatest hockey players. Tough as nails apparently!

He knows that the horse was named after him and is apparently thrilled....

Howe Great needs to win today to get into the Derby......It is going to be a VERY tall order if you ask me.

Dullahan, trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Kent Desormeux a fairly comfortable winner of the Blue Grass, over Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner, Hansen, with Barry Irwin's Howe Great a fair sixth, but looking unlikely to gain a berth for the Kentucky Derby on that performance. Hansen tried to lead all the way but was caught in the final 100 metres. May not stay the Derby distance on that showing.

Think Howe Great finished 5th and I believe that would be the end of his Derby trail.

Looking at this race for me there is not much hope of the Derby winner coming from this lot. Hansen will have trouble staying and Dullahan may be a better turf/poly horse even though he closed strongly last time he ran at Churchill downs. This race also took a lot out of him imo.

I don't like Union Rags either. We will have to look elsewhere. Perhaps Creative Cause and don't count out Went the Day Well. He stays all day and is a smashing horse!

3 weeks and counting......

Tommy, as I've told you all along, Howe Great is strictly a grass performer, and a top class one.

He has beautiful action and horses that move like him generally don't ever get into their rhythm on a synthetic surface. We ran him because the trainer wanted to and I wanted to indulge my clients in this prep for the Derby so that they could get it out of their system.

We have a legit Kentucky Derby contender is Went The Day Well.

For Howe Great, it is now back to the sod, where I expect to see his explosive move garner him more victories in Graded races this year.

Howe Great is out the So African-bred Western Winter mare Ginger Sea, who has gotten off to a big start at stud.

Barry, isn't the 20th spot on the Graded earnings now $300k?? Are there some defections from that list or will WTDW have to run in the Lexington?

WTDW is probably 16 or 17 after the expected defections. We are in. I like him a lot. I bought his dam right after I bought the colt as a one-time placer in an English maiden race and I have him bet in Las Vegas at 125 to 1.

You one upped me as I only took the 100/1 ;) My original bet was on Howe Great at 175/1.

I will be sitting at exactly the same bar in exactly the same spot in exactly the same casino come the first Saturday in May, not that I'm superstitious or anything :D
