Is anyone else experiencing problems with(td) HD DSTV
13 years 2 months ago
They seem to have done a software upgrade this week and my HD PVR has totally freaked out....I have had no joy in calling them as when I finally got through the online techie had me doing hand stands in front of the TV with several hard boots, soft boot and evenually I gave him the boot when he said that I have to bring the decoder in.....W(ho)TF has the time before DWC and Classic day not mention all the sports and PVR"ed movies etc that could be dumped.....also a possibility that I will have to leave the unit with them while they try and crack the box or upload software......another case of a top end monopoly calling the shots....FFS I invested a lot for this high end equipment and service only to have them fcuk around with software that I did not require in the 1st place as it was working just fine without it......and talk about not consulting with their customers.....sounds like a another corporate fcuk up.....:X

A slew of problems reported on the DSTV blog site but it seems only to be affecting the double tuner PACE units that cannot accept the software upgrade. FFS I thought that I had hit the jackpot by getting this discontinued unit as the new jobs cannot record on 2 channels and thus DSTV sought out to bring in the single channel recorder so that if you wanted dual view and double HD recording you would now have to buy 2 HD decoders.....we are now fcuked

Seems like I've got off lightly then. It's been bugging me for days why my text displays on the overlays look different, sort of compressed or with a different font. Couldn't change it with any settings, so must be part of this 'upgrade'. Everything else seems okay though.

But it's so fcuking inconvenient.....we are at the top end of the market to be able to afford such luxury and yet we are expected to eat Sh!t.....lets face it..... after investing in the hardware and then that daylight robbery on installation and a subsciption of nearly R700 a month.....and then being caller no 35 and 7 minutes turns into 27 minutes on hold that your cordless phone dies on you and then you got to run up and down from the bedroom unit while on speaker phone to a Pakistani techie while ripping cables from your PVR that is jambed into a wall unit that you cannot move because your 52" plasma weighs more than the horses you used to feed....
we are too fcuking complacent.....fcuk them....I'll cancel my subscription and rent DVDS.....if any one wants a few DSTV decoders old and new I have more than a few..... :S

Hearing all this I am doubly glad I decided to wait till after Dubai and Classic day before taking my decoder in. Five years of living in the (so-called former) Transkei have made me very, very nervous of technical fiddles and faddles ... they have a way of ballooning up into major hassles lasting months. Thanks for the warning Muhti!

It's not been a good month for technology. My Telkom landline failed twice. It took them 7 days to get to me on the first occasion and 3 days to re-visit for the problem they had not cured first time around. They were very sniffy - pointing to cable installation as being the problem. 'Telkom don't install cables' they told me. I know that. But it is their sub-contractors who do so. I have no choice or control over their appointed contractors so why are their anointees my problem. Let's move on.
DSTV - Channel 174 effectively does not work any longer despite software 'upgrades'. Happily I seldom see anything on it which I want to watch that is not already avaialble on a non HD alternative channel; so that problem is not terminal.
Both of the above problems highlight quite dramatically the weakness of buying into subscription services. In both cases I pay for a service which is not being delivered and have no effective recourse. Telkom will not credit me for the days where I have no service at all. Neither will Multichoice.
I use professional installers to install, maintain and upgrade my home theatre. They tell me that the failure rate on decoders is astronomical and point to the poor quality of their manufacture as possibly being the reason.
This raises a question I have put to Multichoice before : Why do we pay for decoders ? ( The obvious response being : because you are stupid enough to tolerate being charged! ). Multichoice is in the business of selling subscriptions and not hardware. The substantial monthly charges should easily cover hardware costs or possibly be incorporated as is the case with cellphone providers.

While we are on the subject of TV problems can I ask the Forum a question? I keep on losing the sound on 2 channels, sometimes for weeks at a stretch, on 260 and 402. Then for no obvious reason it's back again ... for a while. Then gone again. Does anyone else experience this? Anyone know the cause?

I have had the same problem sporadically(but not on those channels) I have found that a "reset" normally does the job!
