great race. i must say that WaW is a 1200m horse and not a 1000m horse. I am not taking anything away from VdR.....i had a lovely bet on her and also have the double with Magical Eve and i even took the double with VdR onto JACKSON........all i am saying is that if the race is over 1200m, WaW will win 10 out of 10

I am not sure why the post mortem? I am sure most punters had no doubt the WAW would win over 6 furlongs, the only question was would Val de RA hold on over 5 and the answer was yes, was always going to be a close call.

Great race

Val De Ra claims clash of sprinting titans

BY MICHAEL CLOWER 3:55PM 21 JAN 2012

Report: South Africa, Saturday

Kenilworth: Betting World CapeFlying Championship (Grade 1) 5f, turf, 3yo+

The remarkable Val De Ra (Dennis Drier/Alec Forbes) came out on top in this clash of the sprinting titans, but she had to work hard to hold off even-money favourite What A Winter.

J J The Jet Plane, a six-time winner at the top level, tired in the closing stages and finished over five lengths back in fourth.

Forbes bounced Val De Ra, a 17-10 chance, out of the stalls and kicked for home early, but was challenged by Karl Neisius on What A Winter.

The pair got to within a neck and Neisius said: "I thoughtI was going to get there."

Forbes shared his rival's view, adding: "I had a moment of doubt. She had never had to fight off another horse to win before but she did so admirably."

The daughter of Clive Brittain's Prix de l'Abbaye winner Var has now won all but one of her 12 starts.

Drier said: "Let's see how she comes out of this before deciding on plans. I am just grateful to have been able to pull this one off against the boys and have her prove herself a champion. She has shown she is world class."

Lucky Houdalakis was not disappointed with the performance of J J The Jet Plane, who was having his first start since March last year.

He said: "The horse is blowing hard and it was just a pity that he had to jump straight in at the deep end. But the bottom line is that he is not a five-furlong horse. There is now nowhere to go until April."
