The weight conditions of the Met have changed in the past few years to favour the likes of Igugu over the "nearly" horses.
And whoever the hell says Polo Classic was a no hoper wasn't reading Winning Form or Sporting Post in those days.
I also know that the arch shrewdie Robert Bloomberg fancied Alastor a bit.

CM you know I took 9/4 with SP and was a bit nervous when it was scratched, but I said at the time I expected it to start evens or money on?
So 16/10 might still be worth a bet, try and find doubles
Good punting!

Horse of the year Igugu 11-10 for J & B Met
BY MICHAEL CLOWER 3:37PM 16 JAN 2012
South Africa: Horse of the Year Igugu is as short as 11-10 locally to give Mike de Kock his third J & B Met win at Kenilworth on Saturday week.
The Vodacom Durban July winner was forced to miss her Grade 1 warm-up at the Cape Town course nine days ago with a respiratory tract infection. But she worked well at Randjesfontein in Johannesburg last Tuesday and, just as importantly, scoped clear afterwards.
Gimmethegreenlight, the first three-year-old to win the Queen's Plate for 39 years, will attempt to become the first of his age to win the Met since de Kock scored with Badger's Coast 12 years ago.
Trainer Justin Snaith, who will also be represented by last year's third Run For It and Grade 1 winner Emerald Cove, said: "With his new rating of 117 there is nowhere else to go other than the Met. The rating means that his chance in the Durban Julyhas already gone."
Snaith, whose long term target is the Breeders' Cup Mile, has lodged an appeal against the horse's rating, upped 10lbs for the Queen's Plate win.
Gimmethegreenlight is an 8-1 chance. Tales Of Bravery and Bravura, third and fourth in the Queen's Plate, are joint second favourites at 7-1.
Bravura's trainer Joey Ramsden finally decided on Sunday to go for the easier Investec Cape Derby with his Cape Guineas winner and Queen's Plate runner-up Variety Club.
The field was reduced to a final 16 on Monday but the draw will not be made until Thursday when many of the runners will work on the course.

I see that that UK horse Frankel got a merit rating in the high 130's, would Igugu be competative against that type of overseas horse?
