And the club to put in R250k - that's what usually happens

Very early 80's, UK, match race with Lester Piggot vs Willie Shoemaker to determine the "greatest". The Shoe won the match but cant remember whom he was riding. But who did Piggot ride? Spanish Pool, before he was imported into SA.

Mac found this on google...
American Champion Jockey WILLIE SHOEMAKER on PRINCES GATE (left) coming home to beat Britain's LESTER PIGGOTT on SPANISH POOL in the Long John Scotch Whisky Challenge at ASCOT. The two horse match over the old mile course was in aid of charity.

So it wasnt one of these matches on the same day as the Senor Santa/ Northern Princess match race...Wonder what it was then?

The most tragic match race?
July 1975, Belmont Park, Ruffian vs Foolish Pleasure. 50 000 racegoers and a TV audience of 20 million.
The match race was Ruffian's 11th race. All Ruffian's previous races were won by an average 8 lengths. She equalled two track records and eight stakes records and every record bar the Mother Goose (won by Rachel Alexander) still stands today.
After 600m when Ruffian was in front by a length she smashed her sesamoids in her right front leg. The jock couldn't stop her and she continued running ripping her skin and tearing her ligaments. She went into surgey but when she recovered from her anaesthetic she flailed wildly until the plaster cast smashed her "elbow". She was euthenised.
