Excuse my ignorance at this topic, but I've only been betting on the horses for about 2 years.
Why do we not have these "match races" anymore?

Match races are always about jockeyship and tactics, and the best horse won't always win.
Best memory of this was the Winning Form Challenge, where Michael Roberts completely outrode Gavin Howes (Northern Princess vs Senor Santa), going to the front at just the right pace for a mile. Gavin sat a few lengths back from the break and had no hope of making up the deficit.
Old adage: you can't beat a front runner who doesn't stop.
Apart from that, Michael is the all-time genius.

Roberts lists the match race as the greatest race he was involved with..
“Probably the last match race in South Africa – ironically perhaps, it was sponsored by Summerhill - on December 30, 1989. It was called The Winning Form Challenge and it was a mile race between a son and daughter of Northern Guest - Senor Santa and Northern Princess. There was a capacity crowd on hand to witness it even with a cricket test and a major surfing competition underway on the same day. Everyone said Senor Santa would win it but I just kept a little bit in reserve. We sat and waited for him [Senor Santa] and in 3 strides my filly went bang and got him on the line. The crowd went bananas.”

Imagine if jooste put 250k and adams 250k in a winner takes all race between variety club and gmtgl in CT, that would surely get the crowds to flock in. No excuses of draws, pace or gaps with striker and marcus riding

BC, what a great idea. This will be awesome if it ever happens. I for one will be at the racecourse
