Maybe slightly off the subject and having Scotland as my first team and SA a close second and kids with only SA in the blood, I find SA supporters in general very critical of their teams/players with regards rugby, cricket, jockeys etc
Would be over the moon if Scotland had the same problems and talent as you have here in sunny SA

Scrubbers the horses may be but riding them to win is just as skillful, maybe more so, than riding the good horses to win.

Is it easier to ride well (and look good) on a willing talented horse that loads calmly, jumps smartly, is easily controlled in the running, doesn't drift in or out and finally gives its all when asked for it? Or on a horse that is sour or stupid, fights with the rider, wanders around in the straight and finally refuses (tail lashing) to put in a decent effort at the finish? It takes a good, even great jockey to get a win out of the second sort, or even a place, never mind if it is on a Monday afternoon in Kimberley or at Royal Ascot with the Queen watching and all the racing scribes scribing.

You're getting mixed up between riding success - in the big prestigious events - and riding skill - in any race, anywhere, big or small.
