Mac from my close mate an agent for a top jock or ex agent as he wasn't paid I would suggest keep your job rather lol as not very lucrative at all. As the saying goes short arms and very long pockets

I must have been one of the lucky ones. Many moons ago (1988/89) Owen Heffer and myself did Basil Marcus' KZN and Cape rides. We are always paid on time, down to the last cent. Years later I did the odd KZN Feature meeting for Piere Strydom, and again I always got every penny that I was owed.

But then, both of those guys are true professionals,

There is something else to consider here. For you to earn R30k a month your jockey needs to be earning R300k.

I always found this part of the arrangement a bit flawed and that it was done only on a com basis. Personally i think you should receive a basic wage and then a lower %. If jockeys did it that way then most agents would "only " be agents. As far as i knew then most agents had other incomes.
SO i think if a jockey paid someone R15k a month basic and then 4% comm that agent would be so full time it would be scary and in the long temr that jockey would reap the rewards.

When i 1st started doing rene's rides that was all i did, i therefore was on course all the time networking, watching, learning, listening. BUT it was not sustainable, i used to clear between R1500 and R4k per month from rene (to the cent on time) but it was not enough

Muzi pays me 15% across the board and R500.00 towards my airtime with a guarantee of 5k per month which includes when he is off due to injury or suspension...my money is in my account on the 27th of each month and in the 16 months we been together I have never had a problem...however it is very hard to rely solely on that income and one has to treat it as an additional income opportunity which is where the problems start because it can be very time consuming if your jock travels.....I have not heard of many guys that dont get paid but it does happen...
@ blueyonder your mate must feel he got Robbed ;) ;)

100%, was amazing to be with him and listen to him piss off trainers in order to get Pierre the best ride and then WIN the race.

Cost him in the long run. Trainers have the final say 95% of the time so Rule 1, dont piss the trainers off. Would have been very good with Pat's attitude. Can you imagine what Pierre would have done with Pat as his agent? Just ask Muis! Pat without doubt the best ever so far. If an agent wants to copy and aspire to be the best just copy him. Just spoken to Michael Roberts and he tells me Pat is semi retired in Hermanus and does not look a day older than he was 30yrs ago. He agrees with my opinion of Pat.
