Grant Huntley different class. I personally think that ab agent for lets say and i mean no disrespect "fransois herholdt" can shine more than an agent for Anthiny Delpech. You see all jocks tell you its a confidence thing and the more rides you take the more chances you have.
Even though for a while the rides might be soupmeat , those supmeats open doors.
As for Fourie's agent if this story is true then i hope fourie sticks with him/her because they are a team and fourie needs to trust that this decision was the correct one.
Richard has a bright future ahead of him and if he is prepared to "lose" a job over a matter of principal then i bet you that the snaiths call him before he calls them. this is assuming that the story is as it has been told here.

Brought Piere up here in 1988, on a "3 months TVL rides campaign" . That way, Piere wouldnt feel any pressure to "make it " up here, as it was a "short stay". It was important to build his confidence. Brett Warren created the base for us.
We concentrated on
1) Image - immaculately dressed always, only ONE beer or drink at any function or after races. (easy to do as Piere is not a huge drinker etc)
2)Press - after EVERY meeting, we went up and spent about an hour in the press box, talking about the day etc.
3)Management - During the first vyear or two, Piere was not allowed to confirm or decline any rides. He had to refer Trainers to me. Piere bought the Computaform and then found out what he was riding. Also, I arranged his work riding, eg where, for whom and at what time, etc.
During that time, the very best agent around was Bruce Gray. First with Rhys and later with Waichong. A few years later, Tony was very good and Easy took every jockey that he touched up many rungs. By that time, I had taught Beaty to do the rides side and I stayed on the management side.
Then along came the travelling and it was hard to study the form Nationally. Then came Grant Harrison. And what a job he did !!!
I remember a call from Mr.Ferraris, which went something like this..."C%$#@T ! Can you please get that Grant fellow to STOP CALLING me ! He just doesnt stop and he doesnt understand the word NO !"
Yip, that was Grant Harrison - the very best Agent that I ever met !
Ultimately, Piere focussed solely on his formidable riding talent and the team did the rest.
To me, Agents are essential in Racing.

I remember Grant Harrison, myself, and Piere himself debating over and over again whether Piere should ride Gaelic Find in the 1993 July. Grant and myself especially went over it a million times ad nauseum, eventually committed Piere to the ride - and watched him finish second at any price behind Anton on Dancing Duel. Man - so near, yet so effing far!
Grant Harrison really put his heart and soul into his job, for sure.

Anton does a great job doing his own rides. Grant a nice guy socially but a lot of the time some trainers including us would not deal with him and actually put other jockeys on because of him and his attitude that Pierre must ride your horse if he decided Pierre should.Got told to F O many times!

Is it lucrative being an agent? Or should I still keep my full time job?

Craig, I can just imagine! Getting Harry to take no for an answer could be harder than teaching a hippo to fly.

Used to annoy the trainers no end. Sometimes would even say he had spoken to the owners and say they had said yes. Quickest way to annoy a trainer. Used Jeff Lloyd a lot in those times.

Imo wheather in the top 10 or not most jocks need an agent excluding anton for obvious reasons as he has the communication ability coupled with riding ability. Most jocks I have met need to go on a Vodacom course on how to retrieve voice mail messages and answer calls. Hence the obvious need for agents. So its not just donating 10 perc or 15 perc as it apparently is because then the jock must field all the calls and make them with marketing etc etc. Unfortunately most jocks percieve like going into a night club for them is for free so the job must be done for free too lol. Unfortunately as Titch I'm sure will agree takes a lot more time and effort even for the top jocks than most would care to believe.
