The bookmakers association have obviously opposed the licence but one of the main players has,in his own words,"conceded defeat".
In his opinion Betfair will be licenced and operating within the next year.
The reason he will continue to succeed regardless,is that he has already got strategies in place to make the best of it.
Small bookmakers in littie "dorps" should benefit if they can take advantage of a hugely bigger customer base, and no credit!!!!!

Just as well we don't have such strict laws pertaining to SA jockeys , we would have no jocks to ride our horses ??!!!!

now for those that hate betfair - how many UK jocks/etc have been banned/suspended etc because of evidence/ betting records gleaned from betfair? How many Jocks etc have been caught in the most honest racing district in the world - SOUTH AFRICA (where it's banned)? Yeah let's keep betfair out - The Ostrich Race continues

Mr H

The UK bookmaker fraternity also opposed betfair. They had all sorts of stories. No one though (for a while) reported the "free bet" arrangenents MANY of them had whith trainers. Then the truth about UK bookmakers shananigans started to creep out into the public domain and BETFAIR have gone from strength to strength.

You dont have to wait longer than next years classic races, watch tv and you are guarenteed to hear " that horse trained at coolmore , is pretty short with Ladbrokes. As you know they are pretty close to that yard"

This statement above is NO secret, it is mentioned by presenters on all channels at least 5 times a year (that i have heard myself)

My question is

" what the f uck does that actually mean?" are they saying that ladbrokes have an in with coolmore?

With a little bit of lateral thinking ,Saftote could have done a deal with betfair, and had a wonderful negotiating tool to assist in it's endeavour trade the open bet, with bookmakers.
They didn't even need to label it an exchange, just a fixed price division of the tote
I had a discussion (in front of witnesses) with a senior "P" man who assured me that you could not compare the tote to a betting exchange........within a month the gambling review board reinforced the principle........they called them both "person to person" gambling........I am afraid that is the vision we are relying on.......It's just not cricket.......lol

it was a long standing arrangement that many UK trainers had with bookmakers. They could "get on" provided they did so "only" with the bookmaker. If the horse lost the bet NEVER had to be settled. In essence the bookmakers were "buying information and therefore it gave them the option to be 1st to market.

The "funny" thing is this is exactly the same thing as what some of the jockeys have been found guilty of, they "sold " information for reward if it won.

So if you are a serious trainer/owner and you punt like a lunatic then you would be better off doing a deal like this with a bookmaker. You then make 1 call to him, you get on and he knows that he can get on with his competitors at an advantage. BETFAIR has effectivel stopped all that bollocks because the markets are established by punters opinions, in the "old " days of flutter.com (original betfair) and in its 1st few years Betfair also used to seed the markets to create/stimulate betting but those days are gone now. If a horse is 2/1 on Betfair and 7/1 on course then 2/1 is the real price. In the UK markets a disparity like this does NOT happen BUT in weaker markets (USA) its common for a horse "trading" at 4/1 "on course" to be even money on betfair.

SO trainers now are f ucked because the bookies dont really have "that edge" anymore. Sure they can still get on with bookies for a free bet BUT now they would actually be silly to because if you think yyour horse will win (obviously you do hence you backing it) and Ladbrokes are betting 3/1 and Betfair have the horse at 4.8 then you are silly to play your hand to Ladbrokes even if it was for free as you are getting 27% better on the exchange. 4 of those and you are laughing.
