what do you guys think, it seems like punting becomes costly on big race days as compared to a normal weekend or midweek meeting.....???

Nothing written in blood and would guess the big days have more competitive races we get some big days where the fancied runners arrive and some not, same would apply to small race day, no fixed formula IMO

far better off playing very small on feature racedays as many horses run because their owners want a runner on such a day...sometimes its easier said than done because you get caught up in the big occassion and you cant help yourself...my record on such days is dismal

Imho, I have found that bigger races = better horses = stronger markets = win more.

"Soup meat" racing where we cater to the worst horses (in impossible to workout handicapped races) are the hardest and serious punters should walk away in general. When the athletes are very poor, a tiny improvement has a big effect, and because they are not very good, their performances are very in-and-out otherwise we would call them consistent.

How to choose between bad and badder is far more difficult than between good and better for me. A good example is see how much easier it is to pick a winner than to predict with any certainty a horse to run say a 7th. The further back in class, placings, merit...anything further back becomes harder.

In hindsight my bigger wins have been on big races. Nice days include names like Pas De Quoi (Met 33/1), River Jetez (Met 25/.1), Big City Life (8/1 July) or The Apache (20/1 Daily News). Obviously there is a long list of losers, but you can see it's easier to have a go on these types. You can at least rely on them to repeat excellent performances or even improve if you can figure out what they need or what may suit them before other people.

Big races give you time to think, time to get on, and a chance to get much bigger prices maybe than raceday. You can double on with selected wins and places to lever your position because it is races and horses you are waiting for. Who waits for soup meat in a MR70-fillies over 2400m?

At the end of the day, there is only one thing that separates winner and losers and that is without doubt, discipline. They can write books and work out handicaps, but discipline is the ingredient that bakes the cake. It's the hardest thing in the world to find, and to keep.

the problem with big races and meetings are the value aspect,....why should i be taking 2/1 on feature race where there about 6 or 7 horses in a field of 10 that can win.....thats the hype....why should i be taking 2/1 igugu in the july....there are far better 2/1 shots in maidens where only 2 or 3 horses have the form to win....so i feel that kenzia is right ....big days will become costlier...because u will back fewer winners at the same prices available in a bread and butter meeting.....for me....maiden and plated races are the races to have a big punt in...u will def. be the winner in the long run.....information becomes useful when your trainer tell u that the horse has ability...and will go through the divisions...so those horse we back in lower merit rated races...like jackson on saturday for instance......that was worth the 8/10..than taking...any favourite in jhb on saturday
