Peermont Charity Mile

RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming & Leisure; Peermont and Emperors Palace

Racing with the stars!

THE Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile, a glorious event that brings together top racehorses and famous people in aid of charity, will be held at Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday 5 November.

One of JSE-listed racing company Phumelela’s major races of the year since 2005, the event is sponsored by hospitality and gaming company Peermont and Emperors Palace, one of 14 properties operated by Peermont in South Africa and Botswana.

Charity Mile will be the highlight of a blockbuster race meeting at which four other feature races will be run including the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, which is restricted to qualifying graduates of the previous year's Ready To Run Sale and carries a stake of R2 million.

The Charity Mile is a unique and exciting way for Peermont, Emperors Palace and horseracing to help people and animals less fortunate than ourselves and this is how it works:

* The Charity Mile is a normal race in every sense. What’s special is that each runner also races on behalf of a charity and its finishing position determines how much the charity wins. To add glitz and glamour, each runner is publicly represented by a celebrity. Celebrities this year include Highveld Stereo’s afternoon drive presenter Bailey Schneider, actress and business woman Karolina Sky, SuperSport’s Neil Andrews and Olympic gold medallist Ryk Neethling.

* A total of R550,000 will be given away to the 16 participating charities. The charity represented by the winning horse gets R100,000 and emotions will run high as the runners drive to the line. The joy, the excitement and the tears of the representatives of the winning charity are the most touching moments in horseracing annually. Here’s the breakdown (should a runner be withdrawn, the relevant charity gets R20,000): 1st - R100,000; 2nd - R70,000; 3rd - R50,000; 4th - R40,000; 5th - R30,000; 6th - R29,000; 7th - R28,000; 8th - R27,000; 9th - R26,000; 10th - R25,000; 11th - R25,000; 12th - R20,000; 13th - R20,000; 14th - R20,000; 15th - R20,000; 16th - R20,000.

Charity Mile 2010 was won by Alderry, who ran for Emperors Palace-nominated Fortune Kunene Primary, who was represented by Mmabatho Montsho.

It’s a great occasion in every way and it’s a great race, and race meeting, to bet on. Charity will win big – so can you!

Nominations for the R600,000 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile close on Friday with supplementary entries accepted until Friday 21 October when the weights will be published. Final acceptances fall due on Wednesday 26 October when the ballot for barrier positions will be done and the horses assigned to their charities and celebrities.
