Betting on sport with the markets available in South Africa,is still in the dark ages.
Have tried to find betting for the Czech open(the official European tour event this week) and the "top" sports sites, including Ladbrokes, offer only limited 1st round ,3ball match bets.....nothing more.
NO MARKET for OVERALL WINNER,TOP 5 or TOP 10.......how basic is that.
If you want that kind of bet ......you guessed it!
Sorry guys ,but local sportsbetting markets are a rip-off !

You guessed it.....as in original post!
I would have thought that at least one local market would take their lead.

Rob I know all the local markets seem to close the overall winner as soon as the first round tees off other than Majors.
I have to agree with you there is always a live market with Betfair and it shouldn't be that difficult to price up and make changes according to them. If one of the local bookies did would certainally have a head start on the rest.

Shrek, that is why I am surprised that no locals are looking to expand.I think that most punters who punt on golf ,tend to change their position constantly. If live markets operated over 4 days,I believe that 1 bet would convert to a minimum of 10 or more......surely an increased hold must be beneficial.
As you say ,Betfair is the purest "supply and demand" market and an ideal guudeline/yardstick.

Thanks Hibs.......my fav bet at the start of a test is "lay the draw" with a view to trade...........was suspicious as to why the draw was trading at 7/10......makes sense now.

Hibs if you got 5/2 I will take more!!!!!!!! England will win in 3 days anyway..............
..
Rob if you are in a position to lay the draw, I would say go for it , especially at 7/10................

When there is rain about batmen finds the overhead conditions far more difficult and the ball does more that in clear conditions. So even though overs are lost with the stop start weather and the ball doing a bit I believe as long as the rain is not set in for 3 days England at 2/1 will still be a good bet to win this test.

I am often quite surprised to discover how few posters on this site have managed to establish workable relationships with bookmakers to the satisfaction of both parties.
Guys - without this you are cooked.
I have also tended to drone on about the reality that your relationship with your bookmaker has to be symbiotic rather than confrontational because without this facility you are going to be an interested spectator rather than a player.
I make no secret of the fact that I bet with two outlets ONLY : I use Interbet for fiddling about ( primarily for all of the very few bets I have on horse racing; most of which are on UK racing ) and Sedley Barr for the sports betting. Trawling around from outlet to outlet in search of the next 'free' betting voucher or 'special offer' is no basis for establishing a meaningful long term relationship with a substantial line of credit - which is your first and most significant requirement.
I have already described my arrangement with Sedley Barr Racing in a previous post but will repeat some of the salient points here for those who missed it :
Once you have established some history ( ie your settling is reliable ) this outlet will lay you pretty much whatever you want whenever you want it. In some instances you may not be able to obtain a 'stretch' but, as a punter, you WILL get on at the price.
The only circumstances in which you may not get your full requirement is when you arrive for a substantial bet on ( and I quote ) a 'last race maiden plate in Kimberley' where the market is too thin to allow the bookmaker any opportumnity to take back or trade out.
But you can generally write your own ticket on any event with an international flavour or where there is a global market.
In my experience I am often able to take doubles or other multiples for well over R1 million a shot which should pretty much satisfy the requirements of all but the very big punters.
Other arrangements can also be negotiated - eg : during Super 15 season I can get up to R 20,000 OF a team via SMS without having to speak to the bookmaker if the match takes place very early in the morning. This is providing the SMS is sent before kickoff!
If there is any event or 'exotic' on which I want a price I just have to ask and they will work something out for me. It must be understood that sports betting is still in its relative infancy in this country so a little patience is sometimes required.
Nevertheless I do get a little irritated that sports markets often seems to price up very late in the week and, in doing so, eliminate any opportunity of taking doubles with earlier events into the match in question. In fact - ante-post markets in general are poor in South Africa.
Having said all of the above I must concede that there is generally very little done to stimulate or promote interest in sports betting. I have certainly seldom seen a market or exotic advertised which evoked a response : Hell - I would like to have a bet on that!
