ANOTHER MARKETING OPPORTUNITY SLIPS BY...

Hardly a week goes by without some talking head popping up and bemoaning declining attendance, declining interest, declining....well everything.

We even have the CEO of Phumelela bleating on about the open bet, taxation etc., and whinging about 'how unfair' it all is. Boo hoo. We are not alone. At Glorious Goodwood yesterday a MASSIVE amount of radio time was taken up debating whether Frankel's performance would make it onto the sporting pages of the British press and not just into the racing papers. Sound familiar?

But I digress..........

I switched on Tellytrack yesterday primarily because of the Goodwood meeting. But there was a lot of other action and it got me thinking:

1.) Kenilworth had a full card featuring both Marcus & Delpech. How often do you see these two at Kenilworth together? Let alone at a mid winter meeting. Did the sleepwalkers at the club make ANY EFFORT to highlight their appearance and its likely impact on the meeting?

There were any number of angles to exploit. But we prefer to wail on about how tough everything is................

2.) The abovementioned are locked in a thrilling contest for the championship. Really? Would you have been aware of that at Kenilworth yesterday? Another angle to assist with interest in the meeting.

3.) Grant Knowles commented that exotic turnovers were about 20% up on the day. I wonder why.........So despite being paralysed with inertia there WAS additional interest tapped. And the interest that could have been tapped? No - they simply piss on that opportunity. Which begs the question : What exactly does their marketing department do?

4.) Bookmakers also need to be asked : Why is betting on the championship suspended during the meeting? Is it s-o-o-o difficult to calculate odds that they cannot make this an 'in running' event? Shame on you all.

5.) The 'Frankel Event' could have/should have been incorporated into the afternoon. In terms of ability he is the horseracing equivalent of Barcelona.

Take the mere presence of Marcus/Delpech, the Jockeys Championship, Glorious Goodwood, well filled fields, a stand alone South African meeting and any management team boasting even a modicum of ability would have been licking their collective lips.

This lot now really needs to go. They couldn't recognise an opportunity if they fell over it. And yesterday there was opportunity. Hell, even I was involved and I detest South African racing without its overpriced betting and bizarre results.

On a similar note, I switched over to channel 200 yesterday for the first time in a while.
They covered US baseball and American football. Does anybody actually watch that stuff over here?
Anything about Marcus/Delpech? Jet Master/Captain Al? Gold Cup previews? Not on your life.

Someone suggested that racing needs to promote itself to get broadcast on these sporting news channels.
Who is promoting US sports for them to get a slot?

What is more sickening is at the end of the season the SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPION JOCKEY gets fcukall for the title, its been the most entertaining season in my small punting career, marcus has been in and out of hospital and has been riding with bronchitis, delpech has also given it a good go sacrificing his family time and traveling but all for no reward for these two champs!
Laff made a good suggestion that P and GC should each put 5k a month and lease a luxury car for the champion jock, they could even brand it like all these sharks players I see in DBN. Cmon P and GC wake up these are our champions, you'll spend thousands to bring the international jocks here yet do fckall for our local champion!

I think a good idea bad company, a flashy sponsored car of their choice ( within reason - NO FERRARI'S , MASERATI'S ) with advertising perhaps
