BETTER BETTING through RESEARCH
WHY DID I NOT WIN ANY CHAMPION PUNTER EVENTS?
Answer: Betting Strategy
Solution: Review the ways of the winners.
WHY YOU WILL NOT WIN ANY ABC MONTHLY COMPETITIONS?
Answer: Betting Strategy
Solution: Review the ways of the winners.
WHY DO YOU NOT KEEP BETTING RECORDS or at least ACCOUNTING DETAILS?
Answer: You do not want to know the result/the bottom line. (You will not look so good …to yourself)
Solution: Get your pen and calculator out …you will at least have a starting point from which to improve.
WHICH PUBLISHED TIPSTERS SHOW AN ANNUAL PROFIT FROM SELECTIONS?
Answer: None????
Solution: Get such stats published…at least you will have an idea how much you will lose by following them.
“ A man who plays the races successfully must have opinions of his own and the strength to stick to them no matter what he hears”…from Racing Maxims and Methods of Pittsburgh Phil.
IS THE ‘ALL TO COME’ SUPERIOR OR INFERIOR TO OTHER ‘COMPARATIVE’ TAB BETS?
Answer: Inferior to the Double by 28%. Inferior to the Pick 3 by 32%. You work out the Jackpot comparison.
Solution: Always play what you feel comfortable with, yet remain aware of alternate, more beneficial options.
DO SYSTEMS WORK?
Answer: None that I have seen posted…they fizzle out, usually fairly quickly.
Solution: Systematic approaches and structure work yet often require a lot of maintenance – form work groups.
DO TRAINERS TARGET CERTAIN ‘BREAD and BUTTER’ RACES?
Answer: Yes
Solution: Research and identify them.
Through a simple Trainer Performance Rating system (15 points is good) primarily used to identify, and quantify, trainers in form, the following was uncovered:-
G.Van Zyl scored 43 with 4 winners and 2 thirds, including a 16/1 winner who paid really well on the tote.
Others who perform well in such ‘circumstances’- STP, MGA, RRM, OAF and previously CSL and SGT.
WAS THIS A PARTICULAR TRACK, DISTANCE, CLASS or JOCKEY combo ?
Ignoramus guessers shall be reported to the ‘guvnors’… and hopefully struck-off the role!
Some 5 years ago the Sporting Post published a letter I compiled asking if anyone was interested in sharing horse playing research work…there was not any authentic responses. At that time KM suggested I try abc…well here it is again, it takes me a little longer to get going these days.
For the suspicious minds…I am not selling anything! However, as much as the next man/horseplayer I enjoy RAR – recognition, acknowledgement and reward…there are few who attain and achieve this.
It would be wonderful if there was more magic/s in horse playing…from our lips, hopefully to the ears of the Goddess of Gambling.

THH,since selling my business I have been working on various strategies on horserace betting.
Do you reside in JHB area ?If so perhaps a coffee(or stronger if you prefer) some time and have a chat to see if we are on the same track and see if there is mutual benefit in sharing further findings etc.

There are systems that work, but most players don't have the character and discipline to stick to them in my opinion. Most players can't handle the enevitable downswing due to varience in gambling, or get braver and loosen up their criteria when things start looking good, only to get robben when varience swings the other way again. Good money management also flaws many players even when they have excellent handicapping abilities. There's so much to learn in this game, and that's the reason I enjoy it so much. I have heard of professional players who have gone an entire year at break even trying to perfect their systems, how many of us have that kind of persistance and determination to create the ultimate system?

Hibs, have always loved it and was always" working" at it,but when I retired decided that,in order to maintain goals, the challenge was to move from recreation to a making a living ie. join the 5%.!!
The part that amazes me is how different the 2 situations are........would never have believed that it would be like chalk and cheese.

Studied racing full time for 3 years, objective to be a proffessional punter - improved my game but did not make it!
Over the last 8 years I have won on 4 of them. In that time am up 17% due to a very good 2003, in last 7 years down 12% due to a terrible 2005. Went 20 months without making a withdrawal.
Think 10% profit is possible.

HORSERACING RESEARCH
Mainly follows 3 areas with a variety of aspects therein:-
1. SELECTION CRITERIA (Fundamental Analysis)
Data collection…boring, yet needs around 400 samples to provide statistically sound results. Processing…exciting, especially if the prelim work looks promising.
Identification of positives and negatives (usually lead to further analysis).
2. BETTING APPLICATIONS (Technical Analysis)
Basic risk and benefit evaluations.
Market comparisons.
Betting strategies.
3. ATTITUDE
Values and beliefs, honesty and self assessment.
Maintaining energy, confidence, emotions, balance and staying inspired.
Being the best you can be.
When playing the horses I feel my input is an investment and whilst winning is sweet, the enjoyment of the whole process is paramount.
I feel that when punting for pleasure the focus is on the race and a balance between ‘thrill’ and ‘regret’ is easily achieved. When punting for profit the focus is on the bet with the ‘regret factor’ often overshadowing the ‘thrill factor’ and wins being a relief rather than a thrill…challenging.
Any views or direction from the clan, especially on 3 as it is not that well covered in books or papers etc relative to horse playing.
