IGUGU STILL 7/2!

Easy win boosts Igugu's Durban July claims

DURBAN July favourite Igugu (Mike de Kock/Anthony Delpech) boosted her claims for South Africa's greatest race on July 2 by storming home to comfortably justify her prohibitive 1-4 price.

She sweated up a bit down at the start but Delpech sent her on after a furlong. She drifted left halfway up the straight but kept up the gallop to beat Emerald Cove by two and three-quarter lengths with the deKock second string Berry Blaze third.

Delpech said: "She was looking around and I had to click her a couple of times to get her to pick up the pace. Obviously we are now looking forward to the Durban July and I will probably never again ride a filly as good as this."

De Kock, winning this for the fifth time in 12 years, said: "She was a bit quiet in the ring and I think she is a little bit short of her best. But she showed what a natural she is and Ibelieve she will get better than this."

No great Durban July threat emerged from the colts and geldings with 16-1 chance The Apache (Gavin van Zyl/Raymond Danielson) getting up close home to beat 9-5 favourite Run For It by a short head with English Garden the same distance away third.

Solo Traveller took a strong hold but faded to finish second last, confirming the view that he does not get this trip.

Danielson said: "The Apache was travelling a little bit harder than I wanted but, when I got a split, he quickened to the line."

Van Zyl added: "Back in 1989 I won this on Roland's Song and I then rode him in the July but he didn't quite stay the trip. Hopefully, though, we can spoil the party for Igugu!"
