They have a new sponsor aswell...
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
Recall Effective Security Services is to sponsor one of South Africa’s oldest feature races, the East Cape Derby for three-year-olds to be run over 2400m at Arlington in Port Elizabeth on Sunday 15 May.
The Derby will be the highlight of a two-day racing festival in Port Elizabeth. The festival kicks off with a race meeting at Fairview on Friday 13 May, when the Dahlia Plate powered by Die Son over 1200m will head the programme. Die Son is the official media partner of the festival, which wraps up with the East Cape Derby meeting two days later.
The Derby meeting will offer fun for the entire family and there’s R10,000 in cash to be won in an on-course lucky draw.
“The East Cape Derby has a special place in my heart because my horse Lizard’s Desire won the event as a three-year-old,” said Albert Boshoff of Recall Effective Security Services. “We are looking forward to the day and believe it will do much to expand awareness of Recall Effective Security Services.”
The company originated in South Africa in 1989 and is a wholly owned South African entity. The company’s vision is to be a highly respected and specialised professional security company providing integrated security solutions using a skilled workforce and state of the art technology.
“We are delighted that Recall has the East Cape Derby as a platform to publicise their brand,” said Phumelela Group CEO Rian du Plessis. “We are committed to building the East Cape Derby into a major social and racing event and we look forward to working with Recall.”

"We are committed to building the East Cape Derby into a major social and racing event" says the CEO of the very company that is trying its darnest to sell the Derby venue off.

He didn't say that this major social and racing event needs to be held at Arlington - from P's point of view, Fairview will do just as well:D

it looks like phumelilow battle to get sponsorship outside their uncle in the furniture industry or someone already connected to racing via ownership

Well we had built The Derby Weekend into a really major social and charity weekend raising in excess of R140k for East Cape Horse Care Unit, PE Animal Welfare, East Cape Cerebral Palsy Ass and Nazareth house and R25k for Cape based charity raised at the wine auction which was part of the weekends social activities.
Our transport contract was terminated after our many complaints about the training tracks and facilities at Fairview. We are continually told that "the budget cant do extra turning of the tracks in the morning" The Derby contract was linked to the transport but we were prepared to continue the Derby as the weekend had become so popular with our loyal sponsors but our offer was rejected so now there are only 2 sponsored races on the whole weekend. A large contingent of sponsors from around the country would also support the weekend by being here so hope the function rooms can be filled the same way this year with the same sort of people committed to racing.

The problem with the monopolistic situation that has been allowed to exist, and to continue,is that almost every area of employment or business,in the industry involves "P" in some way. This creates an environment whereby threat of job, directly or indirectly, or loss of revenue/contracts becomes a strategy, and this situation needs revision by the competitions board,as it is tantamount to extortion. Many persons involved in the industry, have no option but to tow the line as alternatives are non-existent.
The problem is ,that it is the affected parties that need to take the action as those of us that are not directly affected will be ignored!

Rob, the affected parties are also ignored. I sent a letter to the CEO and Mr.Davis on the 4thApril regarding the apparent victimizationof those that have the audacity to complain about facilities etc. To date I have not even had an acknowledgement of the letter never mind a reply!!!!!! My letter included 2 Vet reports about the amount of horses injured at Fairview.
In April we had another 2 horses injured on the training tracks. Torcida Split out for at least 2 months and Dance Lecture, thank goodness, only a minor injury. This from a small but very well managed string. We feel this heavily as we have no owners to pay bills but all paid by ourselves. These are not the only horses as I know of others with other trainers as well.
Complaints fall on very deaf ears all the way to the top.I wonder if they are receiving benefits from monies saved from the maintainence budgets????????
I have also asked RA to look into this from an owners view.

Newturf,I'm afraid it is only some governmental or regulatory body that is going to change anything, and that is a HUGE IF.However, taking that route has its own inherent dangers......you could starve due to being squeezed out of business and being ostracised whilst awaiting an outcome.
BTW....The benefits of monies saved become dividends!
