Brave Schofield racing clock to be fit for return bout with Caviar

GLYN Schofield hasn't ruled himself out of a miracle comeback to ride Hay List in a showdown with Black Caviar in Brisbane next start.
And Hay List's trainer John McNair said yesterday he would give Schofield all the time he needs to prove his fitness to ride the powerhouse sprinter in the Group 1 $400,000 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 14.
The champion jockey broke his right collarbone in a fall from Hawk Island in the Sydney Cup last Saturday but he has vowed to do whatever it takes to ride Hay List in his return clash with champion Black Caviar. Schofield was injured just prior to Hay List's runaway win in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes at Royal Randwick.
The champion jockey was operated on by specialist Dr David Duckworth earlier this week but was well enough to return home yesterday. "Dr Duckworth came in on Easter Monday to do the operation," Schofield said.
"He inserted a plate in my right collarbone which will aid my recovery and I've got to say my shoulder feels pretty good at the moment."
Schofield was told his collarbone needs three-to-four weeks to heal, but there are only 18 days to the BTC Cup.
"It's going to be tight," the jockey admitted.
"But I'm giving myself every chance to be fit to ride Hay List.
"I'm going to start spending time in a hyperbaric chamber which hopefully is going to speed up the recovery process."
McNair said that he had been inundated with calls from jockey managers about the ride on Hay List in the BTC Cup. "I think I've had a call from every jockey's manager in Australia - and some from overseas," the trainer said.
"Glen Boss rode Hay List in the All Aged Stakes and said he was willing to come back from Singapore to ride the horse at Doomben.
"But I'm in no rush to make a decision and I'll wait to see how Glyn recovers from injury.
"We have another week to 10 days before we need to worry about a jockey."
Hay List and Black Caviar have met three times with the mighty mare winning each race decisively, including their most recent clash in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes at Randwick on April 9.
However, Schofield and McNair have kept the faith and still believe Hay List is capable of ending Black Caviar's unbeaten run, particularly over 1400m.
McNair also revealed Hay List may still go to Adelaide for the Group 1 The Goodwood on May 7 if suitable transport can be arranged.
The cost of flying Hay List to Adelaide for the big race was estimated to be around $35,000 and SAJC chief executive Brenton Wilkinson told The Daily Telegraph he intends to contact SA Tourism today to see if sponsorship can be arranged.
"If there was a way to get Hay List to Adelaide, I'd do it," McNair said.
"I would have no problems then putting him on a plane to Brisbane to take on Black Caviar the next week.
"I don't think Hay List has ever been going better and the way he has pulled up after the All Aged Stakes, I wish there was another race for him this weekend."

Hibernia, Hawk Island was bought in the UK for $20000 and has won $660000 to date. The way Hawkey was travelling he would have taken a lot of beating as his stable companion won the race and Hawkey is a much better horse.

If I were a gambling man I'd have a small wager that Glyn makes it by May 14th, All the best.
