Stakes on the Highveld
14 years 2 months ago
According to the program / racing calendar on sahorseracing.co.za, I see that stakes for maidens as from May have dropped to R63 000 from R70 000 - I assume that this is now for the 'off-season'; however I was under the impression that the drop to R70 000 (from R80 000 last year) would also apply in the 'off season'. Also stabling and other costs certainly do no drop during the 'off season' - why should
So in less than 6 months the maiden stakes have dropped by more that 20% - what next? I guess no one will mention this at the sales?

Dividends to shareholdes apparently have not dropped. Invest in Shares not horses!

Morning Robert,
Details of this were presented at the RA AGM. The drop to R70 000 from R80 000 was to create a splitting fund for maiden races. The reduction created the ability to split 32 races from Jan to July 2011.
Reducing the off-season stakes by 10% was the only material reduction to the overall carded stakes which were reduced to approx. R164 million from R165.5 million.

Thanks hibs; so we should be thankful that the stakes for non-maiden races have not dropped as well - not sure if these are still being split (but I thought they were in some cases), but if they are, where does the money to provide for the 'extra' non-maiden races (almost exclusively handicaps I would have thought) come from?
I think what we as owners in P land would really like to know is why the stakes were reduced while the dividends to shareholders were not.
Interesting to note that the drop in maiden stakes were reflected in an almost identical drop (percentage wise) in the average price on the NYS.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i was under the impression that CO-MINGLING would benefit stakes and there should be an increase...
I'm sure P mentioned this when CO-MINGLING was introduced ... Am I missing something?
