There are many factors that set MDK apart, but probably his greatest asset is assessing what he has in terms of each individual horse. His placement of horses, both in terms of distance and class,is way superior to anyone else.Whilst each horse is an individual, and some are obviously more difficult to work out than others,I 'marvel' on a daily basis as to the general ineptitude of most trainers when it comes to their primary job.Meeting after meeting I hear trainers saying that they can't work out the right trip for their horse.Hows this possible?
As a form studier, the ability of a horse over a particular distance is of primary importance, and studying form and breeding allows one to assess this. However, too many trainers simply have no clue.Maybe I shouldn't complain,it provides betting opportunities, but imo trainers these days are too worried about having a 100+ horses in their stables at 6K+ a pop and thus incapable of doing their primary job.
The perfect example of this is how few moderate maiden runners we have in lowly handicaps.I know there are elimination problems, especially in GC country, but most trainers haven't even worked out that their moderate 58 rated maiden is far far far more likely to win a MR 66 hcp than a maiden plate.Week in and week out I hear trainers on USO say that it will be tough for their moderate maiden winner now that he is out the maidens and running in a MR race. What utter hogwash,it's much easier for him now than it's ever been.It has taken 20 runs for him to win a maiden, but the hcpper knows what he is and gets rated accordingly.Go and have a look on formgrids and see how many horses that take 20+ runs to win a race actually win or place in thier very next start, provided it is in a hcp.
Too many fools with too much money, that's what racing is made up of.
I totally agree with Ruffian,if your trainer isn't doing his job and you know your stuff, you have every right to have your say.
