Nicholas Rey Foundation

The Nicholas Rey Foundation is proud to announce that
a new partnership was established between the Trust and Luyt Lager in early January 2011.

The most obvious thing for Luyt Lager to do was to show its commitment, and to obtain a share in the
racing career of Shark Attack, the colt bred by Ricky Smit, Founder of the Nicholas Rey Foundation.
Shark Attack was sired by Casey Tibbs, who also sired Big City Life, winner of the 2009 Vodacom
Durban July.
“It brings everyone together”, says Smit. “The Foundation is a North Coast initiative which was launched
by me, in 2005, both the Rey and Luyt families live on the North Coast and we are very fortunate to have
our very own Luyt Lager Brewery, on the North Coast.
“Being a long time friend of the Rey Family, we decided to support this worthwhile and much needed
cause”… says Dr Louis Luyt. “I have been very involved with the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Rugby Fund
and I recognise many similarities between these two organisations. What I find astonishing is that Ricky
managed to create this Foundation, driven by her passion for all things equestrian and helping others, to
what it is today. The time has come to help her so the foundation can grow.”
Commenting on this new partnership, Director Louis Luyt Jnr said:” We’ve chosen the Nicholas Rey
Foundation as one of the equine-type organisations that we’d like to be involved in because of the close
relations that exist between us all. This is all very exciting and new for us and we look forward to getting
more intimately involved in the equine industry in the future.”

Ask Ricky, and she will tell you that breeding a race horse is certainly a long term project which poses
many risks. But these risks did not frighten her as she decided to try her hand at breeding and raising
funds for the Foundation by doing so. During 2006, the Summerveld Equine Hospital donated a
Thoroughbred Mare, Far and Away, to the NRF, the sole aim to raise funds. Negotiations took place
between various role players and she was finally sent to Cape Town for covering by Stallion, Casey Tibbs
who is standing at the Hemel en Aarde Stud in Hermanus. She was returned to Summerveld Equine
Hospital during early 2007 and the foal arrived on 23 November 2008.
On the 9th of December 2008 at the Summerveld Equine Hospital, the NRF arranged a small event
celebrating the arrival of the foal. Many guests attended this function and it was on this day, that Keegan
Daniel, Sharks Player, was given the task of naming the foal. This is how SHARK ATTACK came about!
After the ceremony, Shark Attack and his mother, Far and Away, were taken to Roski Stud, where they
lived together under the special care and attention of Stud owner and breeder, Greg Royden-Turner.
Shark Attack is a “late” foal, which means that he is at least 3 months younger than his peers, but this did
not stand in his way in any way. Soon, Shark Attack learnt to fend for himself as he grew up to be a fine
young colt, with a lovely nature but with the typical attitude one would expect from a Shark!
In late June 2010, Shark Attack was taken to Ambleway Spelling Farm, just South of Pietermaritzburg.
“When Shark Attack first came to me, he was very nervous but he settled in soon and became relaxed.
He progressed very well into the programme and I am satisfied that he has turned out to be a fine horse,
ready to start his training at the end of January 2011, with trainer, Bart Rice,” says Jane.
Bart Rice, is equally as enthusiastic as he has been monitoring his progress with Jane over the past few
months. A lot of pressure will be resting on the shoulders of this young trainer, but he certainly has an eye
for a good horse and the Foundation is privileged to have him train Shark Attack on behalf of the syndicate
who have bought into his racing career.
There are only a few shares available of Shark Attack’s Racing Career and they sell for R2000.00 per 1 %.
Shark Attack will be officially trained by Bart Rice at no additional cost to purchasers and the Summervelt
Equine Hospital will take care of all medical requirements during his racing career which mean “No Hidden
Costs!”. Buy your share now to support the Foundation and own your share in a race horse!
Watch this space for the next chapter of Shark Attack!

About Luyt Lager
Luyt Lager was first launched by Dr Louis Luyt in the early 1970’s and it has been a longstanding desire of
Dr Luyt to re-birth Luyt Lager. “Luyt Lager was very popular in the 70’s and it is very popular now”, says
Louis Luyt Jnr. “We brought back the original taste, the crispness and freshness and with that, come
nostalgia that goes with this beer. If you are a new drinker to it, you will create new memories, because
with this beer comes good times”.
Luyt Lager is a micro-brewery involving a bio-chemical process. “Unlike other breweries, we filter our
beer twice, we cool it off immediately thereafter in a very big cold room at 2 degrees so the beer always
remain fresh” says Dr Luyt.

Hi Guys!!! Thank you so much and it is good to be back JD!
I must say I was never really gone... but then again, the twins have just started big school and I am still in a state of shock! Zoro, I thought you forgot all about me! I am still upset that you never came to Diamond X (2007)!!!
Well, exciting things are happening for the Foundation. I am just warning you that when you are in Durban, you better change whatever brand you are drinking to Luyt Lager... It is a great sponsor to have on board and I have big plans for the future! Just remember, the inn thing to do in Durban will be to be seen with a Luyt Lager! We are working together to ensure that KZN outlets will provide that for you! Please invite me for a beer next time out as I have just started dringing at the very young age of 29!!! (and a few months).

Cheers
Ricky
