Smoke and fire

Heard many rumours about Pakistan bookmakers getting one of our locals to pull up a few horses. I wonder if the Jockey Club is involved in any enquiries ? I have been told of a few trainers who get phone calls asking for tips from Lahore and if they tip correctly they are rewarded handsomely (20K). Poor Paki's will end up the losers.
In terms of jockeys the usual names are being mentioned. One thing I do know for certain is that the Pakistan betting market on South African racing dwarfs the volumes we have here.
Anyone know what I am talking about ?. I hear the PE guys know the full story. Maybe they can shed some light ?

And the silence ?
No need to look as far as Pakistan - JHB - CPT and DBN bookies pay the jockeys too - how do you think they make a living - over round books?
As for the Gambling board - they know - but why should they worry - they get 6% of winning bets.
Bookie lays fav for R500K - R100K for the jockey
He wins R500K - but wants to show a loss for the day.
Hence he adds winning bets after the events -
If on soccer - no tax to Gambling board
But we need to pay some tax - so we will add winning bets on horse races too - pay 6% tax to gambling board.
The joke is - more than 90 % bookies do that - and that's the way the industry operates!
Perhaps we must create a website were we name and shame the jockeys that take bribes?
But then - it will be like ITC - most will be on there!

I been in the game many years Mr West and would like to find the bookmaker who is able to get the volume to lay a favourite for 500k. I also disagree with your thinking that the jockey gets 100k. They will sell themselves for much less(
What if the horse wins ? The blokes with a standard six make plenty mistakes from what I have been told.

It true that they sell them self for less.
But believe it or not - they sell the fav from time to time.
I have stood on the course - and was approached more than 3 times to lay a fav for a jockey - not one of them won.
Have seen a bookie lay a prominent Durban jockey at evens for +R500k - ran a weak 4(h.
Have seen the opposite too - syndicate backing a prominent jockey for R200k stake money - from 15/10 to 2/1 - saw the bets 14 times - 13 times it won. Sat next to the bookmaker while we was getting on. I was not part of the syndicate (not part of the circle) but helped myself.
As for trainer bookmaker agreements - seen than many a times - still see it - and follow him with great success
Surely the public cannot be that naïve.
The jockey sees the bookies have priced him up 8/10.
He has worked another horse for. A different stable, which is running in the same race and knows he cannot beat the horse he worked.
What is he to do - tell the trainer of the 8/10 that they cannot win?
The trainer of the 8/10 has already stuck the owners in.
The owners started backing the 8/10 on thursday, again on friday!
What must he do - he cannot win - he knows that - maybe 2nd?
So - what would you do if you were a jockey - need money to pay the bills ?
Lay the horse?
My opinion
Many a jockey have a Betfair account on the father in law's name and lay the fav he rides (the ones he indicates) on betfair?.
Have seen the following too -
Jockey gives his brother a. R6 PA each week - brother gives it to friends via sms each week - friends give it to their friends each week.
Same jockey gives different PA to big punter, who gives it to his mates.
Same jockey's wife takes straight line R1000 PA which is different from the other 2.
Straight lines wins + 90% of the time.
Had all 3 PA 's. 2 on my table every saturday morning and the 3 PA about 3 min before the jump of the 1 st leg of the PA.
If you look at the straight lines, many a time the jockey leaves himself out on an ODDs on fav but banker the ODDS on fav in the 1st 2 tips (tickets).
So the public fills the Place accumulator pool with tips from tickets 1 and 2 - he (and me -when I get the straight line) collects the pool?
But believe it or not - they sell the fav from time to time.

RE Andrewest post 17 Oct 10:05 am. What racing needs more than anything if it is to survive is, just like any other business, a good and growing customer base. In racings case read Punter for customer. This in my opinion is racings biggest and most important mission. In line with this, one can only hope and pray that any potential customers out there, both young and old, do not read or hear about the unmitigated, baseless ' kak ' put out in the post mentioned above.
