Well there are a number of trainers who train for free, and take a higher percentage of stakes as payment. It is NOT directed an anyone in particular.
Grooms as a whole are not looked after in the racing industry - there is the odd yard that is different.
But I would like to ask, with jobs being so few in these times, what is your definition of a "happy groom"?

Rubyclipper, a "definition" of a happy groom, I could not answer for each and everyone... maybe the ones that stay by the trainer for a lengthy period of time... is able to send money or take money and possessions home to his family in need... a groom that owns a camera and in his spare time off photographs people for a little extra... asks his younger brother to come work with him... is sent on course to improve his riding skills... turns down another job offer outside as a security guard... returns from leave and is happy to see his horse again...
