It's not a matter that there are also some white trainers who wouldn't have minded a handout.
The issue is when an industry in a majority black country, finds that it has practically no black people in certain roles. So it becomes a political question (is it 'good' for this industry to have 0 or only 1 black trainer?) and the point about affirmative action is then to specifically address that one issue, ie install some black trainers, at the expense of other (even more) important issues.
If we try and fail, well then maybe we didn't try hard enough. It cannot be healthy for any sport to stay lily white. Certainly if the punters were all just white, there would be no racing.
Having said all that, training is a very peculiar profession.. it's one of those really quirky endevours in life.

Just as a matter of interest and no way racist, but do they have many black trainers in the UK or States?

i know that the majority of punters in SA are black ( they are the majority so naturally) but how can that be related to "coz they the majority that means that there should be a pro rata of black trainers". please dont get me wrong im all for transformation etc... but the reality is that in some sports history shows that different racial groups perform better than others... how can that be politically corrected??????

Some very interesting views on this thread so i thought i would add my 2 cents...
If you have not had doors slammed in your face because of the colour of your skin you wont understand the need for transformation...
In every sport the custodians (racing authorities) are responsible for development and transformation...the buck stops with them...they need to do whatever it takes...
Very few people understand that for transformation to happen it requires massive investment in developement...development of people and skills facilitates transformation...
No Black owner whether they are indian, coloured, african and even the chinese was likely to support a trainer who does not have a proven track record, its never gonna happen...
Like with other spheres of SA society, the only way to ensure transformation happens in racing will be to legislate...nobody wants that...
How can we continue to have a situation where the overwhelming majority of punters are black but a very small % are bookmakers, trainers, jockeys and officials...the blacks are on the outside looking in...
The racing authorities better deal with this asap because once it moves from being a racing issue to a poliical issue things will be out of their control...

If things continue to fall on deaf ears then there will be only one solution left.....LEGISLATION...

Nice response Jack. I have to agree with a lot of what you are saying but is it not an old money new money thing rather. Old money "white/indian" vs new money emerging black diamonds. New money is often spent on flash rather than enjoyment a lot of the time.
Andrewest in his eccentric way on another thread makes it clear for us what transfromation is and does for all.
We need to understand transformation. In my view its not ripping out of white hands to put into black hands. It is about creating more for everyone through transformation. It is opportunity for all if done correctly. Creating a bigger pie of which we will all still get our piece. What would you prefer 100% of a R3,000 pick 6 or 5 % of a R2,000,000 pick 6? If more of our people participated fully in the economy the more there would be for everyone. at the moment the only thing the vast majority can afford is basic food and transport.
Lets set aside black and white for a while. I am a white boy from apoor family, folks long time dead, left the world with nought and passed on nought. I did not go to any of Andrew Bons fancy schools, so therefore do not form part of some special club. Tell me how do I become a trainer????
Thought about it? Now tell me how does a black person become a trainer. I have a better chance.
