Magic, do you think that the July being run a month later means the 3 year olds have a significant advantage? Bearing in mind there would be no WFA allowance if the July was run tomorrow...

I guess the result answers the question, but any perceived "advantage" that the 3yos had with the later date of the race this year must be offset by the fact that Bold Silvano and Irish Flame respectively carried 1.5 kgs and 2 kgs more than 3yo Eyeofthetiger won with, the most a horse of that age has won the July with in the modern era, In other words, they had to be very very good to achieve what they did today, and it's worth remembering that most of our horses are probably born between September and October, so the August 1st "birthday" is artificial. Neither BS nor IF will in reality be four years of age tomorrow, though Bold Silvano's 1st September birthdate makes him relatively old for his generic age group.
They are a very good crop of 3yo males, that's the bottom line. And they went a good pace, courtesty of Red Rake, so Bold Silvano had to carry that relatively hefty mass for a true 2200m, which was in every sense a much more stisfactory than the crawl-sprint of 2009.
Another fine advert for PE, the world's faster growing source of top class horses (he said, only half jokingly). The Listed racing Association Stakes at Fairview in October has now been won two years in a row by the future July winner and if there is another non-Graded race anywhere with the same record I'd like to know what it is. A bump up to Gr 3 status at least would surely be deserved, especially as when Big City Life won in 2008 he beat Lizard's Desire into second. Not bad for a "minor" Feature in a "minor" centre. eh?

The Plunderer's turn next? I forgot to add that for good measure the runner up in that Fairview race has gone on to win the PE Derby for the last two years. Not a bad little race, all round!

Tommy - distinctly possible after his last win against horses with good Cape form, in a race which was also won last year by Bold Silvano. And being a Spectrum he can also get better at 3.

Yup. With the Service Ace debate gone the same way. What price in a novice plate at the Vaal?
