Flightline cemented his place among the greatest horses to have raced on the Flat after joining the legendary Frankel on a rating of 140, a figure he was deemed more than worthy of by leading British trainers John Gosden and William Haggas.
Frankel has been held aloft as the benchmark for brilliance by international handicappers since ending his remarkable unbeaten career on a mark of 140, which put him out on his own after the international classifications, which had been in place since 1977, were recalibrated in 2013 by former BHA head of handicapping Phil Smith.
However, Flightline was crowned 2022 Longines World’s Best Racehorse at a ceremony in London on Tuesday, with his devastating nineteen-and-a-half-length victory in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar in September equal to the best performance produced by Frankel.
