Singapore racing no more

A thunderbolt has struck the worldwide thoroughbred racing landscape with news that the Singapore Turf Club will cease operations from as soon as October, 2024.

In recent times rumours have been swirling that the future of racing in Singapore was under a dark cloud with suggestions racing could draw to a close by 2026.

But in a move that has left the Singapore racing community in shock, it's understood that timeline has been brought forward, with dismayed stakeholders informed of the decision on Monday.

It's understood Singapore Turf Club will soon provide an official release stating the reasoning.

Looming large however over the decision is said to be the government's desire to "repurpose" the 125-hectare Kranji facility while the direction and future viability has also been brought into question.

Racing at the sprawling Kranji racecourse launched in early 2000 with Singapore racing at the peak of its powers when local legend Rocket Man was at the height of his powers, winning 17 from 17 on home soil along with Group 1 wins in Hong Kong and Dubai.

I must say this is a surprise and I thought it was one of the role models for a tote based system 😪

.....what a pity....but it will come out that it does very little for that economy where property is at a premium so the taxes there-on must be far greater than what they envisage to make....

My biggest bet that I caught was at Kranji, Singapore. The quartet paid 31k and caught it twice picking up 62k odd. Surprisingly only 10 horses ran in that race. Picked up many other good bets at Kranji.

As Muthiman alluded to land is very scarce. Singapore is a City State so it makes sense to them but there will be hardly green spaces.

The horses might move to Malaysia come 2024. Singapore was once a part of Malaysia. Malaysia already has race courses and could become a bigger regional racing centre in future.
