I am at a loss to understand the MR of CAPPIE. Ran off its grass rating of 63 and won (running to a MR of at least 80) and gets dropped to a 62 for today
Can somebody explain that?

Yes. His last win came in a sand race that was transferred from the turf (waterlogged track), so he raced off his grass MR. Races that are transferred from one surface to another are treated the same way as plate races. i.e. a maximum 6 pound penalty for winning and no penalty for placing.
(Had me fooled as well, I had to phone one of the handicappers to find out).(

Thanks for the feedback Magic.......However(and I am NOT shooting the messenger) only 2 horses in that race(that finished in the 1st 5) had a sand rating, the other being SUN EMPEROR and if that was then the "line horse" Cappie ran,on sand,to a MR of 85,so to give Cappie a new rating of 62,on sand,is still hard to understand.
But hey,the least of racing's problems at the moment so lets move on !

After Cappie's run behind Desert Oil his sand rating was dropped to a 56. He then won on a surface which was changed to sand from turf and as Magic mentioned plate rules apply thus 6p max pen taking him to a 62.
