GIBRALTAR BLUE (Mike de Kock/Anton Marcus), trained by Tommy Stack to make a winning Fairyhouse debut last season when she was fourth to Music Show in the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket, is making a big impression in South Africa.

The Irish-bred daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar started evens favourite for the KRA Fillies Guineas at Greyville on Sunday before making every yard of the running under Anton Marcus to run out a convincing winner, despite taking a strong hold and being six months ‘wrong' with the other 14 runners.

This was only Gibraltar Blue's second start in the country - she won a Turffontein conditions race by over five lengths 15 days beforehand - and De Kock holds her in high regard.

He said: "She is a really nice filly and this was a hell of a win. For her to lead throughout and run a time of 94 seconds and change (1m34.1s) was a massive effort."

Gibraltar Blue is as short as 10-1 fourth favourite for South Africa's greatest race, the Durban July, with some local layers but De Kock advised punters to hold their fire.

He explained: "I would exercise caution right now because her style of racing is putting me off having a go at the July, and indeed it makes me worried about going further than a mile with her. Plus she is six months younger than everything else.

"It's hard to know where to go with her. Maybe she will just have one more run this season but she has proved what she can do."

Lets see If Bravura gets to KZN first?? He is reportedly, injured and on a farm, rehabilatating. It is questionable whether he will run in KZN before the July or even in the July, I was told on Friday night. His prep will probably be done in Cape Town, so Im not sure he will line up in the Daily News- I hope he does, and we can see all these top horses taking each other on.
