My take on the stituation is that if you have enough mates with balls buy a top mare(one that is proven not to be barren). Mate her to the best stallion for her breeding and conformation and put the resulting foal up for sale. Many small breeders have gone bust and through natural elinination there will be far less horses for sale in the next few years. As with houses now is the time to buy the cheapest house in a good area and repair until the tide turns. I think the quality(even if only on paper) of bloodstock will improve and the prices will go up as the amount of horses for sale will decrease as part-time breeders use their cash more wisely and stop breeding and many "poorly bred" horses are culled. Top class horses will command a premium and the lower end will be sold at under cost(we have seen this at the last few sales where there were many horses sold below R30 000- many at the R10 000 level) All it takes is an up turn in the economy(green energy- a transport revolution perhaps? - could be the saviour - Cell phones saved us over the last few years creating jobs all over the place) and one or two bargain buys to make it big and another wave of virgin buyers will emerge. Plan now to have a horse ready for sale in three-years-time and you could just make it big(or have your own mode of "green transport" at worst!!!
