Argonaut hardly one of our best.

He beat a very mediocre bunch of 2yo's
When he won the Premiers' Kilcoy Castle, Kingdom Come and Profit Report were 2nd 3rd and 4th.

The first 2 have never won anything stronger than a Graduation Plate.
Profit Report won the Falcon Sprint, but nothing else of note, and has also been disappointing

They took the money at the right time

There was some talk on the forum within the last 6 months about him. Someone from Aus was reporting on him. Argonaut beat Profit Report on July day 2007. He was touted to be a future July winner at the time and then left for Aus never to be heard of again.

Reminds me a bit of the runner up in the July 2006 Sushisan

Dear Mr Masala

Horse Chestnut won the Met by 8.25 lengths.
Classic Flag and Faralmond were 2nd and 3rd
In the 'July' 6 months before they had finished 1st and 2nd

Horse Chestnut v Argonaut 10 lengths if HC a bit off his best

I admit Argonaut was a lot better than your namesake (Hot Masala)

Argonaut Looks Set To Race In Australia - 08-24-07

August 24 - In terms of potential there is little doubt that Argonaut is currently the most desirable to horse to own and train in South African horse racing. The champion juvenile of last season has attracted worldwide attention with his most recent runs, and it comes as no surprise to us to hear that an Australian stud farm is reportedly in the final stages of acquiring a share of the horse.

If the deal goes through as expected it would value the colt at US$2,000,000. It would also mean that Argonuat will continue his racing career in Australia, which would once again deprive SA racegoers of the opportunity to see the best. However, they can certainly take comfort in the fact that South Africa is now breeding and racing world-class equines.

That point was driven home in the Capades stakes at Saratoga when another former Geoff Woodruff runner, Jazzy, won in thrilling style for Team Valor. The syndicate is the biggest supporter of and believer in South African horse racing, and Barry Irwin has another good one on his hands.

Jazzy won despite running five wide and coming from ten lengths off the pace in a 5.5 furlong sprint on the turf! She beat a couple of highly-regarded sorts in the Capades, and might try dirt in the future where the stakes money is more lucrative.

Argonaut doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same context as Classic Flag.

Argonaut was a champion 2 year old. Nothing more. He certainly had the potential to develop into a top class horse but didn't get the chance, at least over here.

If I'm not mistakes, Classic Flag ran in the July 3 times, finishing 1st, 2nd, and 4th. He won 2 Gr1's, 3 Gr2's and a Gr3 and finished 2nd in Gr1's five times. He was Horse of the Year and Champion 3 y/o colt. Argonaut had/has a long way to go to match that, whatever his potential.
