I notice that last year this time they opened up African Night Sky at 7/1 after a decent MET performance for which his MR could not be raised; this year Doublemint more or less in the same boat - so 10/1 not bad ..... would be nice to hear from the Snaiths if they plan to enter him

Being a handicap, another that appeals slightly at this very early stage (not having a clue on which runners actually have the July in their sights) is Tilbury Fort at 20s

Would not be touching Rainbow Bridge, Do It Again or Head Honcho. With their MR if the past few years are anything to go by will not run off these ratings. I have taken an early punt at 40/1 EW on Barahin. Ran a excellent comeback run after a long rest on Saturday and off a 108 at present will come into the race with no weight on his back. He has also had two excellent wins at the course and the 8/1 a place looks far better value than the top 3 or 4 for a win. Hawwaam off a 112 also looks to have a handy MR but plenty can change with 2 legs of the triple crown left and the Daily News where ratings can increase. The Greyville circuit concerns me with Hawwaam as he doesn't seem to settle and if too far back could battle to make it up on the short straight. The best rated older horse looks to be Buffalo Bill Cody but is untried over 1600 meters and the 6,25/1 looks a bit skinny.

Durban July 2019 – The Betting Opens!
Big race is on 6 July
Updated 5th February 2019

South Africa’s leading bookmakers Hollywood have set the 2019 Gr1 Vodacom Durban July betting pace and have published the opening ante-post market on the R4,25 million contest which will be run at Greyville on 6 July.

Rainbow Bridge – early favourite

While his future may yet well hang in the balance given the sad passing of his owner Chris Gerber, Eric Sands’ Gr1 Sun Met winner Rainbow Bridge tops the early bird boards at 9-2. The son of Ideal World was an impressive winner of the Cape flagship last month and with top jockey Anton Marcus set to stick with the ride, he will have plenty of supporters.

Joint second favourites are the unexposed De Kock import Buffalo Bill Cody and Met runner-up, Do It Again. The latter’s trainer Justin Snaith has already intimated that he may give the July a miss with the dashing Twice Over gelding – who won this race in 2018.

Hawwaam – set to set record straight in SA Classic

Mutliple 3yo stakes winner Hawwaam is the only other possible contender currently in single figure odds. The son of Silvano was runner-up behind National Park in the Gr2 Gauteng Guineas last Saturday after a ride that has attracted plenty of debate in the public forums and which saw the Stipes call jockey Gavin Lerena in.

The Gauteng Autumn programme has changed. The Derby is 1 month (April) before the Premier's Champions Challenge (May). The 3yos can run in both now and the Premiers Champion Challenge is a pure WFA race. If a 3yo does win the Champion Challenge it will unlikely run in the July due to a higher merit rating. The July is going to become a proper big handicap in the coming years like in the UK and very soon you shall see no Grade 1 winners in the race unless that Grade 1 win was 2 to 3 years back.
