In my honest opinion, the penny still has to drop (which is blady scary) ... Striker was working on it around the bend... Was 4th (maybe even 3rd) last with 200m to go... Scary talent.....was a brilliant run from O Susanna, and will not take anything away from her... Still in my mind, the best horse did not win....

Nice article on SP with comments by DK and Striker which concurs with what you observed.

Also talk of maybe an international campaign :(

Would love to see him race again here but I think overseas must be a strong likelihood now

I wouldn't ordinarily weigh in on something like this, but as there was a lot of anti Strydom sentiment before the Met, I think he deserves some acknowledgement for yesterday's ride.

When it comes to Last Winter, I was probably in the doubters camp in terms of his experience and exposed form, particularly given the new WFA conditions of the race. However, Piere is not six time SA champion for nothing. To put that into context, our most decorated champion jockey is Muis Roberts with three SA champion apprentice titles, ELEVEN SA champion jockey titles and one English championship. Piere has an SA champion apprentice title as well as six champion jockey titles, which ties him with Jeff Lloyd. Mark Khan has five SA titles, Anton Marcus has four and Anthony Delpech has just won his third. Those are all senior statesmen of our jockey ranks.

Riding is one arena where age and experience can actually count in your favour and I think Striker proved - again - yesterday that you underestimate him at your peril.

I thought he produced a particularly spectacular performance in the Met, but it is always a privilege to watch him ride. While there is plenty of exciting young talent coming up through the ranks, we have precious few of Strydom's calibre still in the saddle - we should enjoy them while we can.

It would be easier to take if he lost to a better horse....but to lose the last 2 like that is very painful. I hope he redeems himself soon.

last winter lost fair and square to a 3 yr old filly in the met.i would not be raving about him and how unlucky he was,but rather think about how much improvement the 3 yr old has to come in the coming months.think about it,a 3yr old filly winning the met when she is not fully matured, most trainers wont even consider running a 3yr old colt in the met until m de kock did it and won with horse chestnut and then his other 3yr old winner with figgy up.now this filly was trounced in the fillies guineas by snowdance,so just how good are these 2 fillies compared to the older colts and geldings?

.....would have....could have....should have.....story of racing....the filly pulled off a gr8 feat....sure the 2nd horse....came from the clouds....but still ran 2nd.....like the hard luck stories around none other than Marinaresco until he bagged the July....had the pace not been so muddling as predicted ....he(Last Winter) may have run them down and won by a streak....but it did not go that way....the Met has always been and always will be a tactical race....

Have to agree with Muhti..the met is and has always been a tactical race. I saw Striker working on LW at the turn, but by the time he got his turbo tail going, Grant had the price in the bag. Striker is a top top jock, excellent tactician (you don't win the Durban July from the bush twice without a decent brain) but he was bested by a jock I think is the best of the young guns. Grant had that filly up with the pace, tracking the old boys Captain and the Eagle. Marcus pushed a moment early, definitely trying to steal a few lengths, and you think his moving 4 wide midrace and using the horse, did not help either.

Intrestingly, Last Winter swallowed the ground while young GVN was already saluting, reminiscent of the 2 jocks in the 2016 durban july with Conglomerate & marinaresco. only this time the roles were reversed.

Was the pace that 'muddling' ? According to Gallop, the Met was won in 123.5 secs - the Derby was won in 125.62 secs - course record 122.1 .... so less that 1.5 secs outside the course record - can't have been a 'muddling' pace .... B)
